My olld machine ran XP home. I bought a new machine that had Vista. I used the built in transfer program that came with Vista to transfer my old HD to my new HD. But there still seems to be some files I cannot find on Vista that were on XP. That is why I am wondering if there is a program that can compare HD to HD to see if they are the same, or a program that can do something like that. I had not thought of Acronis...good idea. But since the transfer has been done, is there a way to make sure everything transferred?
George
it depends on WHAT you want transferred; data and settings are transferred.
installed programs are not transferred, and with a different OS, you cannot even compare disk to disk; since they're different.
if you want to transfer installed programs, you need a software to do that (not free) and the result is not always 100%.
i asked you to be specific, about your needs, and you answer "But there still seems to be some files " that's not very specific
That wizard only transfers files that originally were stored under the user accounts in "Documents and Settings" of XP. If you stored anything at any non-standard location of your HD, that wouldn't have been copied. It also only copies certain windows user settings, but not all, and it doesn't copy settings that you had for other software.
It's best to create new settings for your new system (how the desktop should look etc.), and just look over your old PC and manually copy the files you need. You will also have to install your software again to the new PC, as that isn't copied, like nobus already explained.

What do you mean with "transfered hd from xp to hd vista"? What software did you use to do the "transfer"? Or did you upgrade you OS from XP to Vista? If so, did you just boot to the Vista DVD and run the upgrade from there?
