Well I cant get into safe mode. And last known good does not help.

I believe this system does not have SP1. Is there a way to check that? Perhaps using UBCD4Win?
I only have a Vista SP1 DVD and my question is: Is it ok to boot off the SP1 DVD and attempt repair operations on a non SP1 system? I was thinking of trying a restore point.

I've waited almost an hour.
Safemode will not come up it offers me a recovery option and when I select it it tries to repair and then on reboot I'm back to the same problem with the never ending progress bar.
It's a laptop there's nothing to disconnect.
I took a chance and booted off the SP1 DVD but it did not see any restore points.

Can check service pack level in Safe Mode, no?
I'd try the restore point before a repair install in any case. Or last known good configuration.
