Vista SP2 Install Error
I've had an HP Pavilion a6110n computer for a couple years now. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I installed Vista SP1 a while back with no problems. Within the last couple months, I've tried to install Vista SP2 but get the following error:
"No such interface supported" "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)
It appears to be an issue with security. I only have one account on this computer and it is supposed to be an administrator account. At least, when I look at it in User Accounts it has the account name and underneath says "Administrator".
I was on the phone with Microsoft support for a couple hours and their only resolution was to tell me to reinstall Vista. Since this is a pre-installed version, I have no discs to reinstall Vista from.
I was going to just wait until Windows 7 comes out and upgrade to that but figured I'd try you folks to see if you had any ideas.
I have Office 2003 and 2007 installed on this. I also have Norton 360 security installed. I have other programs as well, e.g., iTunes, Quicken, etc.
MS Support had me remove Norton and try the SP2 install but it still failed.
Thanks!

Just to be clear: you have to select command prompt in your Start Menu, right click it, then select "run as administrator". When Command Prompt opens - type line by line these commands.

I just tried the above (by copying and pasting, one at a time, to command prompt). I didn't get any errors on them so I assume they worked. I tried the SP2 install again, same error. I believe that when MS support had me do this with some DLLs, I got an "access is denied" message or something similar.
FYI - I also ran the SP2 readiness program and it showed no errors.
Don't know if it's related or not but I can only do updates of Windows stuff (by clicking Windows Update). If I take the option for Windows and other MS programs, I get "[Error number: 0x80070002]"

Tried running command prompt as administrator and SP2 install as administrator. Same error.

Tried above link. It says to stop the Automatic Update service. I don't see that listed. I went ahead and deleted the contents of the DataStore folder then restarted the computer. Same Problem.
I also did the net localgroup command and restarted. Same Problem. I don't have a Vista CD so I can't reinstall what I have.

do you have sp1 cd?
or sp2 cd?
or sp2 cd?

I have both SP1 and SP2 on a USB flash drive. I could always copy them to a CD. What I don't have is a Vista Home Premium install disc.

No, I didn't try that. I figured if it is working with SP1, I didn't want to remove it. I've also applied all updates since SP1 (except SP2 of course).
I'll think about doing as you suggest. However, I may just wait and upgrade to Windows 7 in a couple months as long as my computer continues to do what I need it to.

p.s. I did see that MS had you remove Norton - was ut wuth the removal tool or did they just have you disable it? Have you ever had any other Internet Security products on the system -- or anti-virus for that matter?

Yes, MS had me basically remove everything and disable all non-MS services so that my PC was as stripped down as it could be. That didn't help. I might try some of the above (remove Norton, reset firewall, etc.). At this point though, I think I'll just wait until Windows 7 is available then do a clean install with that - might be the least painful.
I'll decide in the next couple days. If I decide on the Windows 7 route, I'll go ahead and close this.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the suggestions. At this point, I'm just going to wait and install Windows 7 when it's available.

Don't know that there is a good solution to this as about only thing left to do is wipe out everything and reinstall. Folks were helpful with suggestions.
