I could not find windows explorer on the list of programs. In any case I managed to fix it by downloading the zip fix utility here:

Cannot Unzip zip file in Vista using compressed folder
Hello,
I just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista installed. Unfortunately I discovered that all Zip files are associated with Adobe Acrobat. I tried to right click and select "Open with" but could not see the Vista compressed folder option in the list. I also tried to select properties and associate the file with the Vista compressed folder option. But again it was not in the list.
I would prefer not to purchase WinZip so any help would be appreciated.

Just looked at my vista machine at the properties of .zip folder. The association is set to Windows Explorer.
May want to try setting it to that.
