problem certain downloads with vista, xp no problem
I have a small private network with an old xp and new laptop with vista home premium, sp2.
router is Siemens gigaset sx551 (KPN experia).
With the vista I cannot download certain files like mcafee or other virus definitions, pctools definitions, adobe flash. The DLM themselves are no problem. When the downloads start, i get the message that there is no connection to the internet, although it is running fine.
Also, outlook refuses to connect.
I do not use a proxy.
I already removed the pre-installed Norton and its automatic updater and cleand the registry with pctools registry mechanic.
I tried with all safeties down, even the firewall in the router and defender.
Anyone?

This is not a vista problem, it sounds like somehow norton's firewall product still exists at some level, and a partial firewall install will restrict almost everything, if there is nothing on your machine, i would suggest reinstalling vista without the garbage the oem had installed (ie a fresh install from vista disk without other software products). Alternatively you may try RE-installing a current version of norton from thier site as a trial which should repair thier previous version and allow you to at least test with a "working" firewall by disabling it. Then try the removal process again.
