Question

Vista error 0xc0190036 (IMTCCAC.DLL) on boot after SP1 install

Oh Vista, why do you vex me so...!

Hi everyone. If this were XP then I'd have it sorted now & be drinking coffee but this is a bit of a pain for me & I'm wondering if there's a shortcut that I don't know about.

I'd finished doing some other work on a Vista Laptop (a HP Pavilion, not that that matters) and noticed that there was an update waiting to be ok'd. (SP1 as it happens).

So in a bout of generosity before handing it back, I thought "I'll just install that & job's a good 'un". Right...

Reboot after the install & the boot hangs with 0xc0190036 (IMTCCAC.DLL).

It seems that this problem is probably linked to the file originally being corrupted prior to the SP1 install but I'm at a loss to resolve this without nuking the machine. I really don't want to lose the user's data off this one or I'm going to look really bad. (I suppose I could pull it off using a Linux boot CD but I'd rather not go there if it can be avoided).

I have tried using system restore from within system recovery options. It just hangs.

I have tried doing chkdsk c: /r from the system recovery options command prompt. It did report "deleting index entry imtccac.dll in index $130 of file 9550" and "recovering orphaned file imtccac.dll into directory file 9550" but the same error repeats on next boot.

If it were XP I'd be doing a repair install now to overlay the system files but with Vista I'm now a bit wary or which way to go now.

There's no sign of IMTCCAC.DLL in c:\windows\system32 incidentally.

Any ideas on how to get round this? I'd like to at least get it up & working before dealing with the possible HD issues.

Many thanks - Duncan

This appears to be a very common problem with installing Vista SP1 according to a Google of "0xC0190036".

The fix according to http://www.vistax64.com/vista-installation-setup/142270-sp1-fails-message-0xc0190036.html is to boot WinPE from the Vista DVD and manually delete the offending file at the console command prompt.

Problem is, the offending file isn't showing up at the command prompt...    very strange.

I ran across a similar problem last week, and after much research and a lot of trying of every option I could find (including boot off a Linux Boot CD), I ended up backing up the important information off the computer and doing and FFR, I hope this doesn't end up being your only solution too.

You said you tried a System Restore.  Please Detail for me how you attempted the System Restore.

Also have you tried Safe Mode and did that also fail.

Well I finally got there. Repeated chkdsk /r finally sorted out the corrupt index for imtccac.dll and I was then able to do a system restore. (SJC, I'd been trying sys restores from the system recovery options and also from booting from a Vista DVD - it didn't want to know either way till this corruption was fixed).

Since then I've had the hard drive under test & it's been fine so hopefully it'll now behave. Moral of the story? Keep chkdsking those drives!

It's not my week for Vista machines though, got another one that's giving grief with a cdf-ms error. I must've really upset the Gods this week...

Many Thanks.
