Question

Cannot open Port 25 on Vista

Asked by: Scruples89

I am trying to get Outlook 2007 set up to send e-mail. I have all the SMTP settings correct. I use the same settings on my XP laptop and it works fine. But on my vista machine it cannot connect to the server.

So I opened up a Telnet session. I issued the open smtp.telus.net 25 command.
It tells me it cannot connect to that port.

My Windows firewall is off. I have used the utility to manually open port 25. I called it SMTP.

When I look at the machine from Shields Up website, it sees port 25. It tells me it is in stealth mode.

I can send and receive e-mail using SMTP on my XP laptop so It is not my Telus 2Wire adsl modem.

Do you have any Anti-Virus software installed on your Vista PC?

Did you have any anti-virus software on your Vista PC and you uninstalled it?  It may not have uninstalled properly.  If so - what was it?

Do you have any software on your Vista machine like Norton Internet Security for example that may be blocking the port?

What happens when you try to uninstall?

Guaranteed to be blocking you - so removing it in favour of something like Avast might be a good idea.

Are you trying to remove it via Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs?

Please also try the following:

You may need to enable the server feature in AVG.

To do this, open the AVG control center, double-click the email scanner option, click the Properties button, click the Servers tab, double-click the SMTP option in the list, then check off the option at the bottom "Activate this server...".

Click OK to save the change on your way out and Mail should work fine.

Okay, so I have discovered that I can ping both my 2Wire router ip and the ip with which my computer is seen on the Internet according to Shield's Up. But I cannot ping and get a reply past those IP addresses.

So I will try uninstalling AVG again.

I have solved this problem. The Firewall set up by my 2Wire Router had a default setting for new computers auto added to the firewall. This setting permitted internet access but it blocked all other access. I am attaching a jpg of the firewal set up for default. The solution was to edit the default settings for the new ASUS system I was using. I have now reconfigured the default setting so it now permits all connections of out going applications.
