I have looked in vista internet temporary files - nothing about a word document. Looked in the windows mail storage folder - nothing

Try this:
Open an email with doc file, and edit it and save it, do not close.
Go check temp folder, and see if you see that file there.
If yes, then close the doc file and email, and see if that file still stays there, if not, then out of luck.
Also did you check that email again, if the attachement was saved with updated file?

After you close that email, i think that document gets deleted from temp.

But look here:
First unhide all folders from windows explorer/tools/folder option/view tab/show all files.
