Hello,
A computer I am fixing is giving me some problems. What happens is that you can login normally but after 2 minutes all programs freeze. The mouse can still be seen moving around the screen, but no programs can be started, not even alt-ctl-delete works. I have tried restricting all startup programs through msconfig and that did not help. What should be my next step?
The laptop is Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition
Unfortunately I do not know what happen to cause the problem as the laptop isn't mine.

run ram and disk diags, best from ubcd - to test your basics : http://www.ultimatebootcd.
connect the disk to a working system, and run malware scans :

the fact it runs in safe mode, is pointing to a corrupt driver; try updating your drivers from safe mode !

There can be a number of causes for programs to freeze like this:
1. Hardware: Memory problem (run memtest), hard drive problem (run your on board laptop hard drive test).
2. Software: Something is indexing (wait 60 minutes); Virus (scan for malware); badly installed application.
