Vista Feeds Headlines gadget broken

On my Vista laptop the Feeds Headlines gadget is malfunctioning.  There is one item which appears to have become stuck at the top of the list and over time it just stays there.  It's actually dated from September 30 so it should have disappeared days ago.  All other items are appearing and disappearing as expected, it's just this one item at the top of the list on page one of the feeds.

How do I get it to go away?

It could be that the feed in stuck at the server end.  You could try refreshing the feed to see if that helps:

1.  Load Internet Explorer (these instructions are for IE8)
2.  Click on Favorites which will expand the 'side bar' area within Internet Explorer
3.  Click on the 'Feeds' tab at the top of the 'side bar'
4.  Locate the 'stuck' feed and hover the mouse over it
5.  To the right of the selected feed you will notice a little refresh button, click it
6.  You can then click the feed itself to check its contents and see if it has updated

If the above fails it will be due to a problem on the server providing the feed.

I see the problem now, you are correct in that the item is stuck at the server end as it is actually dated September 30, 2010!  Does this mean that the item was dated incorrectly by the server or that Windows or IE 8 incorrectly set the date when it was downloaded?

It means that there is a problem with the feed at the server end.  You could try contacting the administrators of the website involved and prompt them to correct the problem.  Until then you can follow my steps, above, to check on progress.
