Question

What can I do to fix a computer that access the internet through a browser, but not through various applications?

Asked by: OpacityZero

I have a dell computer that can access the internet fine through a browser, but as soon as I use an application (iTunes Store, Trend Micro HouseCall, Malwarebytes update, outlook, etc.) to access the internet, it doesn't work.

*I can download the programs and install them, but they cannot access the internet once installed."

If I try using malwarebytes update, it says: "An error has occured. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team. Error code 732 (0,0)
When trying to access the iTunes store, it says: iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store

Event Logs show these events the most:
EventID:  15016
Source: HttpEvent
EventID:  1000
Source: Application Error

I've disabled all startup items, ran malwarebytes (not updated), and turned off the firewall so far.

Did your computer once have some firewall software installed on it?

I would imagine that it did and it didn't get uninstalled properly.

If you can remember if there was, and if there was, what it was, then a tool can be run to force the removal and this should get you working again.

Unfortunately, I'm helping a friend, so I don't know if they tried to uninstall something before this. I've never used the computer up until now. I'm pretty sure they haven't though.

Okay - perhaps the make / model might throw up some answers.  Can you please let me know who made it and the model number etc.

Thanks.

Okay - in that case - could you please provide me the Dell Service Tag - then I can look up what it shipped with.

Thanks

It came with Norton Internet Security 2007 as a 15 month package (or trial) not sure - but it was there, and if not now, would have been removed, possibly not completely removed.

Looking for the right link to get it removed forcefully.

Here you go:

Please select the 2007 product and download and run this and then reboot.  Hopefully you will be okay.

That error is because MBAM can't connect to update. there are nasties that stops programs from accessing online.

Use Combofix but rename it prior to saving the file to your desktop... or use another pc to doenload it into a USB and rename it before inserting the USB in the infected pc.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs: (Attach the resulting log please)
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

If needed, here's the Combofix tutorial which includes the installation of the Recovery Console:

Try this one first, this might fix MBAM unavailability to update.

Copy/Paste the following into the Search line and click OK

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0
