USB Device Drivers

I am running windows vista. In the past I have never had problems connecting my ipod, usb drive, or external hard drive. However, lately anytime I plug in a device it ask to if I have a disk or if it can search for the driver. I tell it to search but it never finds anything. So I can't ever use the device. Never seen this problem. Anyone have any ideas?
