Vista 32 bit or 64 bit? If 64 bit, you will be out of luck.
Remove "Lexmark x83 Scan/Print/Copy)" from "Other Devices" first.
Re-boot and try again for auto-detection.
Unzip the 5200 driver file into a folder using WinRAR.
When your Vista asks for a driver, point the search for driver to the folder as mentioned above.
Good luck!
Go to the URL below to download the 5250 driver.

My experience told me using "Windows Server 2003" driver is a better choice than Vista driver.
The DriverGuide site does allow free registration but you have to negotiate a lot of adverts.

Let me test it first. You can also download but do not run. I will do a virus scan first.
I am not sure whether it woks or not.
Use WinRAR to extract the fills inside CJB5200EN.exe file.
There will be a sub-folder called "scan" inside.
Connect your X83 to your PC, maybe the driver will be automatically installed or a pop up window will appear. Locate the scan folder and see whether your Vista accepts the inf file.
If this doesn't get any further the latest incarnation of Virtual PC 2007 has USB support so you could still run the scanning in an XP session within Vista using the drivers we know are OK (or even run one box on Windows 7 with its built in XP virtualization). VPC however currently won't support the USB connection "seamlessly" so you'll need to replug the x83 everytime you start a session (seemless - the equivalent of autodetection of what's already connected - USB connection is on the development list)
