Will this need doing every time? Is there a solution so the laptop does not need restarting each time?
Is this a general laptop problem or just the DELL?

Sometimes the docking station works fine, but the majority of the time when I plug it in, it comes up with the message:

Restating usually doesn't help. It sometimes start working again, although not sure why!
Any ideas how to get this so it always works and what might be wrong?

it's a general USB problem usually related to a USB port having a bit of a power issue. Sadly I have found that with a certain combination of port and device it reoccurs regularly. Removing all power resets the USB bus. If youy are lucky it will not reoccur but if it does you will have to live with it.

You will find that it will start working again when you remove power from the laptop completely.
So shut it down properly, remove teh power and teh battery and hold the power switch in for 10 seconds to discharge any latent charge. Now put the battery back in and power up. Your issue should be gone.
