Stop 0x00000124 Uncorrectable Hardware Error
HP Pavilion a6230n running Windows Vista Home Premium is getting a blue screen with the following stop error:
System encountered an uncorrectable hardware error
Stop 0x00000124 (0x00000000, 0x862D1028, 0xB2000010, 0x00010C0F)
Blue screen appears within a minute or two after Windows has loaded. Sometimes the computer will run for more like 5 minutes before the blue screen appears.
Have attempted:
Updated BIOS to latest version on HP web site
Replaced hard drive
Reloaded Windows Vista SP1 from OEM installation DVD, Windows detected and installed all drivers without needing ones from HPs web site. There were no problems during the Windows install.
(The problem was occurring before replacing the hard drive and reloading Windows)
Before reloading Windows, updated Audio, Video, and Modem drivers to latest version from HP web site.
I have attached the latest minidump file. I also copied the text of the "Unexpected Shutdown" warning that comes up once the computer restarts into dump.txt. That message referenced two other files which I have also included.
The blue screen does not seem to come up in safe mode.

Thanks for the reply
all fans are running and the fact that the system bluescreen'd within 2 minutes after first startup of the day inclines me away from heat being the issue
RAM is not loose, and I tend to expect the system to bluescreen in safe mode, or sometime during the Windows install if it's bad. Currently running memtest to be sure -- will be sure to post back if errors are found.
I'd love someone to analyze that minidump file if possible

I've also noticed that it has to do with video drivers too, some say that it happens while opening media, is this happening to you?

jrvzoom,
Lately it has been happening by just letting the PC sit idle for a few minutes after startup. Previously, (prior to the Windows reload) the computer could sit idle for a long time without issue, and the problem seemed to be aggravated by doing most anything on the computer: browsing the Internet, navigating through Control Panel, etc.

yeah, ok, it still could be the video card driver though, so you might want to go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest version and see if that works.
The bugcheck was indeed 0x124 = WHEA = Windows Hardware Error Architecture
A few items to-do that may help a great deal. You have had no Windows Updates since Vista SP1, January 2008 - including no SP2.
You need to allow ALL Windows Updates in + SP2 -- http://www.update.microsof t.com/micr osoftupdat e/v6/vista default.as px?ln=en-u s
1st item to do --> SP2 "Prep Work" --> http://www.techsupportforu m.com/1952 419-post8. html
There is a reason that Windows Updates have not come in - usually relayed to a 3rd party firewall/ anti-virus software. You appear to have an outdated version of AVG installed -

I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/S ecurity_Es sentials/

Thanks for the analysis of the minidump!
Will try updating to SP2 as you mention. The reason there are no windows updates is this is a fresh load of Vista+SP1. Also installed AVG9, but that's it. As I mentioned, all devices were detected and drivers were installed by Windows.
I previously tried updating the video, sound and modem drivers, but will try this again as well. (Need to try to find that SATA driver)
Honestly though, through the years it seems I've always had the most stability with the stock Windows drivers.

Hi -
My pleasure. I understand now the reason for no SP2. Be careful of AVG9, there have been some problems with it recently - a bad driver has been BSOD'ing systems. Not sure if the version that you have contains the suspect driver or not.
As for nvstor.sys, please see post #3 and beyond from MS TechNet Answers forum - there may be something there to assist you - http://social.technet.micr osoft.com/ Forums/en/ w7itproins tall/threa d/5db9fd2b -0960-44cf -af48-84ea 1069c339
Any snow - FEET of it here in NJ!

Reformatted again and loaded vista, minus AVG this time. PC will do fine just sitting idle, but then I tried installing Office 2007 and the BSOD came up again before setup even got going. Am currently installing SP2 via Safe Mode (too many BSODs in normal mode to install it).
Other ideas:
Would disabling Sound/Modem/Sata controllers through Device Manager allow me to rule out those drivers as an issue? any idea as to which ones I should try disabling?
Finally, I read on another thread that perhaps the processor is being under-volted? i.e. 1.2v instead of 1.23v. Any thoughts?
Thanks again!! And only about 5 inches of snow here in the midwest. Not too bad. Enjoy your digging!
