Question

Need Help Installing Driver on HP T5720 Thin Client

Asked by: mcracco

I have an HP T5720 thin client and an ESX server on site as a trial. The 5720 has XPe which I am told I need as one of the devices I need to connect is an Interlink Electronics ePad (USB signature capture device). The ePad needs it's driver loaded locally hence the need for XPe.

From my crash course on XPe, I believe I need to build a custom installation of XPe which includes the ePad driver. I use Microsoft Target Designer to do the build. I start with Target Analyzer which is a utility that runs on the T5720 and creates a file containing an inventory of all the hardware within. This file is then imported into Target Designer and is the starting point for my custom build.

My question is how do I get the Target Analyzer utility onto the thin client, run it, and copy the inventory file back to my PC? The thin client is intentionally locked down to prevent such activities. Is there some other control utility I am not aware of? Or is my understanding incorrect.

Thanks.

Have you been able to log into the thin client and able to make changes that stick after reboot?

On the thin clients, you can install drivers and software, but only certain ones.  When you boot your xpe, hold down shift, this will bring up the logon prompt where you can logon as Administrator, with the password of "administrator", i believe, and in there you can install devices, and write them to the thin clients permanent memory.  There should be a icon in the lower right by the clock that you can write click that will let you overwrite the current xpe that's saved in memory, and it will require a reboot to finalize changes.

Yeah, that's basically it.

If I hold shift while XPe loads I get the login dialog. Using credentials aministrator/Administrator (cap A in password is noteworthy) I get administrative options where I can get at Run, My Computer, etc.

I was able to install the driver, have the ePad be recogniz-ed, and it installed correctly. Right clicking the paddlelock in the sys tray gave me a Commit option which wrote the changes to NV memeory and everything was there after a reboot.

Thanks!
