Question

Does XP Embedded work with WSUS??

Asked by: TJESIOLOWSKI

I am having some difficulty with my thin clients with XPe SP3 showing up in AD able to check into WSUS and recieve updates. Here's the scenario:
1. I remove thin client from the domain and delete the device from AD.
2. I flash the same TC with the newest XPe SP3 image, rename the TC then reboot.
3. I join the TC to the domain.
After these steps, the TC does not always show up in AD. When it does, it is not consistent with WSUS - some will talk to it and some wont.
Does anyone have experience with this and is aware of the proper procedure to go about this? Am I chasing my tail if XPe is not compatible with WSUS?
Thanks!

Since you are using imaging you are most likely experiencing duplicate Sids.

Run the following on any imaged client.

http://msmvps.com/blogs/athif/pages/66376.aspx

============================================

@echo off
Echo Save the batch file "AU_Clean_SID.cmd". This batch file will do the following:
Echo 1. Stops the wuauserv service
Echo 2. Deletes the AccountDomainSid registry key (if it exists)
Echo 3. Deletes the PingID registry key (if it exists)
Echo 4. Deletes the SusClientId registry key (if it exists)
Echo 5. Restarts the wuauserv service
Echo 6. Resets the Authorization Cookie
Echo 7. More information on http://msmvps.com/Athif
Pause
@echo on
net stop wuauserv
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v AccountDomainSid /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v PingID /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

I'm sorry... can you explain what to do with this script? I tried copying it and pasting it into a command prompt and I dont think it's working..

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:08:24ID: 25069929

Do I need to modify the script per SID?

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:09:09ID: 25069937

open notepad and paste into it and then save it as   "AU_Clean_SID.cmd"

"Do I need to modify the script per SID?"

no, dont modify at all

ok.. thanks.. but I still get a message that states: "Error: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value" after the lines for AccountDomainSID and PingID...

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:17:27ID: 25070034

That's ok, SusClientId was the main objective

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:19:19ID: 25070057

ok cool but I'm still having problems with this TC not showing up in WSUS... I just dropped it from the domain and am going to add it again and see if that works...

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:33:20ID: 25070215

here's what I get when I run that.. I think the real issue is that this TC (or any that I re-image) is not being seen in AD...

what is the correct process for dropping a PC from AD then rejoining it without messing up SIDs, etc...??

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:39:32ID: 25070295

you dont seem to be getting the wsus gpo applied to this machine

run from command prompt gpupdate /force

 and then

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /s

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:43:58ID: 25070350

'gpupdate' is not recognized as and internal or external command, operable program or batch fille...

when searching for that reg key, it is not there...

The TC is not showing up in the default Computers OU in AD... I think that is where the issue lies.. if it's now in AD it's not going to get it's gpo....

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:44:35ID: 25070360

i meant to say "not in AD"

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:47:41ID: 25070389

That would definitely be your problem

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 08:52:14ID: 25070433

ok..that;s what I thought... can you point me in the right direction or should I submit a question to another forum?

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 09:01:09ID: 25070518

Try running newsid http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspx

and then rejoining to domain

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 09:36:01ID: 25070870

that didnt work...
It's really weird... I drop the TC from the domain, then delete the object in AD, then rejoin it to the domain. It works when logging in as a domain user until I add the object back manually to the original OU. It still isnt talkin... gpupdate /force still doesnt work...

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 10:44:58ID: 25071495

ok.. thanks so much for all your suggestions but I'm still in the same situation,..
1. I took the TC in question and renamed it something different... then ran newsid on it.
2. I rejoined it to the domain.
3. The TC showed up in AD in the default Computers OU.
4. I moved it to the correct OU.
I think the AD problem was linked to the name of the TC so changing it allows it to show up.. ?????

It still is not showing up in WSUS, though....

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 10:59:05ID: 25071605

did you
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /s  again?

to verify it getting the gpo

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 11:05:25ID: 25071656

there is no such key...

also.. when I go to add a user to the local admins group it doesnt resolve the domain users name..??? something is still hosed up...

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 11:55:29ID: 25072147

all of this leads me back to my original question... does WSUS support Windows XP Embedded?

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-08-11 at 12:00:06ID: 25072198

by: TJESIOLOWSKIPosted on 2009-08-11 at 12:26:29ID: 25072421

cool.. but how do I know my image is configured correctly for updates?
