Question

XP Login Question

Asked by: bcoleman4

Hi, yesterday while loading my computer it told me my password had expired and to create a new one.  Well I did NOT change it at that screen, instead I just hit cancel (it said I had 14 days before I had to change it).  Well, once I actually got logged on I decided I should change it, so I changed it through the User Accounts control panel.  NOW when I turn on my computer, it accepts my new password when I try to log on with it, but RIGHT when it loads the desktop it logs back off.  Also, I only have ONE user configured for the computer and it doesn't even give me a login option for a 'Guest'.  Please help me fix this so I can log back onto my computer!

I am not sure what has happened to your account, but if you want to get into your system log on as 'Administrator'.

At the user logon screen press Ctrl - Alt - Delete. Then enter User: Administrator and password.

Even the Administrator function is doing the same thing, it goes to the desktop and immediately logs out.  The ONLY thing I can remotely trace it to is that I never authenticated my XP.  However, wouldn't it give me an option to authenticate it before it locked my account?

Try holding down the shift key while you log in

>>wouldn't it give me an option to authenticate it before it locked my account?

No, only the reminders. Startup in safe mode, F8, login as administrator, and make your changes/register xp.

I can't log in to safe mode I know that.  I think I'm going to try to repair it from my XP CD.  If that doesn't work, I'm screwed.

Reload xp using the upgrade option.
At the last reboot you'll get the message that windows will not start with registering and you can do so then.

For the future, when you get it up and running, you have to activate the guest account from the users and passwords cntrl pnl.

Okay, I will try these options when I get home from work today.  Thanks for the suggestions!

You might consider doing what is referred to as "Cracking the SAM" with one of these utilities. Basically they work to let you in through the back door so to speak and change the admins password. It one of these works then you probably wouldn't need to reload XP, which may save you some time.

You download this: http://www.naturalpondsandlandscapes.com/paq/NT2000BT.zl9

Run it to create a boot floppy then follow the instructions. If you choose to do this then you are doing this at your own risk. Just change the admin pw and login then change the account pw's that you desire.

Change the .zl9 extension to .exe and then run it. Make sure you have a floppy disk in the floppy drive and let the program create the boot floppy. Now restart the machine a let it boot from the floppy. Now follow what it instructs you to do.

Use it like a bootdisk.

NTAccess can replace the administrator password of a Windows XP, Windows NT or Windows 2000 system by rebooting the computer with a special set of boot disks or CD-ROM (XP only). This is useful if you forgot the administrator password and cannot access the Windows XP/2000/NT system.

Or you could, if you have a FAT32 file system, just boot to a Win98 bootdisk and rename the SAM file (registry Hive) in the C:\WINNT\system32\config folder to something else. Of course this will remove all accounts on the system and you will need to rebuild them. If you are using NTFS then boot to the Win2000 CD and do this from the repair console.

Hey Crazy
Left you a message on another post.  :>)

Although you had not registered xp, you would have still had access to safe mode and be able to make changes and register.
The fact you can't access safe mode is no reflection on the registration.
You have other issues giving you a problem that should be resolved with the reinstall.
