*sigh* I've been frustrated to no end with trying to network winxp home with win98se.
I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me through this.
*NEW*
Well people have posted stuff...lots of comments...
-cables are good (i made and tested them)
-network: 2 win98 machines, 1xp, each have ONE network card and thus: no GATEWAY will be created
-'hard coding' ip's doesn't seem to work on the xp side and still no ping
-my question about ICS/TCPIP hasn't been addressed (pleeease!!)
I've been trying to set up a linux firewall / router instead since this just isn't working...any thoughts?
*OLD*
I have a simple network set up where I want to connect my 3 computers together with a hub and a cable modem to the uplink of the hub. I know that only one computer can access the internet at a time but that's not what is bugging me. I want them sharing resources such as files and printing before I worry about the internet.
I have run the garbage winxp "networking wizard" and run the "network disk" on one of my win98se machines.
I've set the workgroups to be all the same.
I've set all the computer names to simple 9-character names with no spaces
I've set up TCP/IP, windows file sharing, Client for MS Networks.
I've created accounts on both machines with identical usernames and passwords (supposedly for authentication)
I've disabled the XP firewall
I can't ping any computer (IP/NAME) or find it when I search for the other computers.
The bindings for the TCP/IP network adapter are all set for file and printer sharing
Only the XP machine can access the internet (even with the xp machine off, win98 cannot find the internet connection if everything is set to "automatically" find IP addy.
*new* thanks people for responding!
I also followed the "annoyances.org" article...which didn't help.
I was hoping to share with TCP/IP and NOT ICS...why do I need to use ICS over TCP/IP???
The IP addresses are the auto-generated ones that the garbage "network disk" put onto my computer. I don't really understand how it is supposed to work. Especially with the configuration of the IP addresses. Do I need a gateway?
I can't think of anything else to say right now...i'm just really LOST and FRUSTRATED...help would be much appreciated!
