I have a cable modem with a "SMC Barricade" router attached to it, with 5 computers attached to the router. My Windows XP Professional machine has problems with the internet connection only in some weird cases. I have the WinXP Firewall *off* and I have ZoneAlarm Pro 2.6 *on*. Here are some symptoms:
* Mozilla seems to always be able to access the internet without complaint.
* IE seems to always be able to access the internet (except when IE is embedded into other applications). For example, Quicken will sometimes report an error saying "You must first be connected to the internet". Also, Stamps.com sometimes says "You must be connected to the internet".
* If I start a Windows XP update from the pop-up-balloon that says "An Update is ready to install, click here"... nothing will happen now when it used to work just fine, months ago. If I click "Start->Help and Support" it says that I need to run "start a New Connection to the Internet Wizard" and refuses to check on updates. If I start IE6.0 by itself and select "Tools -> Windows Update", then everything will work fine.
* If I ask ZoneAlarm Pro v2.6 to 'Get Update'... nothing happens.
* If I type "ipconfig", it says:

I'm stumped as to why Windows XP Pro thinks that I have
no connection to the internet, even though the programs that don't rely on IE work consistantly on the network.
I've tried the Network Connections Wizard, and have told it that I'm "Always connected to the Internet", but this doesn't change anything.
Any ideas? Feel free to ask a bunch of questions, as I know you will need more details of my system configuration to get to the buttom of this one. Thanks in advance!
