The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

XP Networking in NetBEUI but need ICS

I read with great interest an earlier thread where a poster had problems with accessing other PCs on a Windows XP network where ultimately installation of the NetBEUI protocol fixed the access problem.  

I encountered the same problem on a 2 machine network with a Dell desktop and an IBM ThinkPad laptop.  Long story short - the IBM's Windows 98 was badly corrupted and network was having problems so I (in retrospect, stupidly) recommended an upgrade to XP.  After installation, network connectivity was gone.  I did all the usual tests of the hardware before even recommending the upgrade, so know the hardware works.  It's all Linksys wireless cards.  No router.

Before installing NetBEUI I tried setting up LMHOSTS on both machines - no luck.  Only NetBEUI restored ability to see each other.  Unfortunately, it also slowed connectivity to a creep.  

And I cannot get ICS to work...

Does anyone have ANY workaround to this problem?  My (relatively new) client now thinks I'm an incompetent though I'm not too concerned about that, but I would prefer to at least get his shared internet working before bailing on him completely.  

But here's the caveat - I can't (read: won't) spend a lot more time over there.  I need to know if someone else has actually had real experience with solving this problem.
