The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Partition Has suddenly gone

Asked by de_wagter in Windows XP Operating System

OK, I admit, I have been VERY VERY stupid!!!

I installed XP on a computer with multiple partitions.

MBR -> GRUB BOOT Loader
1 DELL BIOS 15MB
2 NTFS -> XP 17GB
3 EXT3 linux 8GB
4 linux swap 1GB
5 FAT32 DATA 32GB

OK, I needed to reinstall Win XP. So what I did is just reinstalling it, without making a backup of all my data  from the 5th partition. VERY VERY STUPID!!!!! But I had no choice since I didn´t have any way to store these 30 gigabytes of data anywhere.

Ok, so I started the installation, beeing very carefull when choosing the correct partition to install XP.
So I chose the right one, the one of 17GB... but after the first neccesary reboot (when some files where copied on the harddrive) the system hang, saying it missed some neccesary file, and my boot loader software on the master boot record had offcoarse dissappeared. OK, so I started the installation all over again, and when I had to choose the partition again, ..... TERRIBLE TERRIBLE NEWS.... My prior DATA partition at the end of the harddrive, had become unpartitioned space !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DAMMMMMMMMM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don´t think the data is gone, but just that the partition properties (which I do know) are erased.

Does anyone have any idea about what to do to restore that partition.... If there is anything to do I´m willing to spend a whole week on it... Could partitionmagic be of any help?

PS. I have now succesfully installed WinXP on the 17GB partition, but windows allways thinks it´s got a 2138GB  harddisk (in fact it is only 60GB), so I suppose it´s messed up the partition tables?
