Question

Windows XP Upgrade fails with fatal error

Asked by: btphelps

Problem Description: I am installing Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade. This upgrade was purchased through legitimate channels online at www.softwarestore.com. I deleted the old partition and created 2 new partitions of about 19GB each. The machine has 256 MB memory, nVidia GeForce 4 vidio card, Soundblaster Sound card, a 1.2Ghz Intel chip, ASUS motherboard.

While installing XP, I received the following error:

Setup could not register the OLE control

c:\windows\system32\rsaenh.dll

Because of the following error

LoadLibrary returned error 1114(45a)

Error

Fatal Error
Setup failed to install the productr catalogs this is a fatal error.. The setup log files shold contain more information.

This computer has been acting a bit unstable, running Windows ME, prior to installing Windows XP Home. The first symptoms were an occasional, repeated slow down in I/O throughput, where every 10 minutes to so the system would suddenly slow down. We found a onboard fan -- not the CPU fan -- but a secondary fan over a secondary chip on the MB -- had failed. Someone told us this might a chip through which I/O to the video controller runs. We replaced this fan. The problem continued. I replaced the video card with a card containing the nVidia GeForce 4 chip.

The problem was still present. Then the system became very unstable and would hang after running for 30-40 minutes. It seemed to correspond to the Desktop Property Settings for hard disk activity, and I turned off the monitor and hard disk power control settings. This did not eliminate the problem. I ordered XP and was installing it. One thing I noticed was that the point in the installation process where the setup copies files to the hard drive took what seemed to be unnaturally long. The Setup screen says the copying may take a "few minutes." It actually took over 70 minutes. I wonder if there is some problem with the CPU. I don't have any idea if these problems are related to the install problems -- I don't know how they might impact the install and create this error.

I searched Microsoft.com for the two error messages numbers and got no results.
