I suspect this is refering to your hard drive. If so, short of replacing it with a newer better drive, nothing

what test did you run?  what are you trying to do?

by: darnokPosted on 2002-11-12 at 09:40:36ID: 7439182

I went to pc pitstop and ran a test that tested my whole system. Everything was fine except my uncached setting on my hard drive. When I restart my computer it is really slow and sometimes freezes up with the welcome on my screen. I'm not sure but when I downloaded the windows update service pack1 I started to have all of the problems. The test showed that my hard drive itself is in real good condition. Is there a way to reset the uncached speed and if so how do you do it? Thanks. Mike

by: Crash2100Posted on 2002-11-12 at 09:50:20ID: 7439214

as stevenlewis said, that's a hardware issue and there is likely nothing you can do about it.  But since this started after you installed the service pack, it's likely a software issue.  Have you tried running check disk and defrag?  Also make sure your swap file is set at a decent size.

chkdsk c: /f

You could try uninstalling SP1 and see if the problem goes away.  But if you install the service pack, be sure you download this utility that will replace a dangerious file fixed by the service pack.

should run OK, do you have a NIC on board? if so, connected to a network? if not try assigning a static ip address to it, or disable in hardware profile.
also go to start -->run and type msconfig,go to the startup tab, and uncheck all, reboot and test, then go back and recheck one at a time (reboot in between)
Re the original question, unchached speed refers to the speed your drive can read and write directly to the drive with out using it's cached memory (cached will always be faster)

I want to thank everybody for taking the time to answer. From what I got from stevelewis's answer with the link I figure it's just because I downloaded the service pack1 from microsoft. I guess I'll just have to reformat my hd and reinstall windows xp. Thanks again.

by: Crash2100Posted on 2002-11-13 at 16:04:21ID: 7445901

You can uninstall the service pack without reformatting.  Just open the Add/Remove programs control panel and it should be listed as "Windows XP Service Pack 1" and remove it.

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2002-11-13 at 16:52:12ID: 7446040

Agree with the above, uninstall thru the add/remove programs, or use a system restore to ga back to before the install of SP1

by: darnokPosted on 2002-11-14 at 09:56:56ID: 7449356

I reinstalled xp as a upgrade and it seems to have taken the service pack off the hd because when I looked in add and remove I couldn't find any service pack. I went to search and searched for service pack and it didn't come up with anything. I still can't get my virtual memory set. I still get these error messages saying that my page filing is set to low. Another thing I'm having problems with now is trying to get my computer to go on stand by. I have a stand by button on my keyboard and when I press it it does nothing. Sence I reinstalled xp as a ungrade I don't have any system restore to go back to. My computer just doesn't seem to like it was. I have a new Dell computer and it use to work great but now it just seems to have problems sence service pack even though I can't find it on my system. Another problem is when I restart or just turn it on it is really really slow and seems to freeze up a little bit when I get the welcome on my screen. One of my problems is that I not a computer expert just a novice so I really appresiate everyones help. Thanks

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2002-11-14 at 15:40:24ID: 7450749

Do you have the dell restore disk? try using it. NOTE: you will loose anythng you have put on it since you brought it home/got it set up

by: darnokPosted on 2002-11-14 at 16:46:51ID: 7450994

They didn't give me a restore disk but they did give me a disk that has all of the drivers and utilities on it. They gave me a reinstalling disk for windows xp which I used as a upgrade so I wouldn't lose everything but it didn't solve my problems. Should I try to us the driver and utilities disk?

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2002-11-14 at 16:57:18ID: 7451033

Yes. does this machine have a network card? are you on a network? fi it has the card, but not on a network, you can assgn a statid ip to it, should speed up the bootup

by: darnokPosted on 2002-11-15 at 09:52:31ID: 7454167

I reinstalled all of the drivers and it seemed to take care of all of my problems. I really want to thank you Steve for all of the help you have given me. I been pulling my hair out the last few days trying to get my computer back to where it was before I downloaded the service pack1. Thanks again for all of you're help. Mike
