The Startup Sound Is Not Played Correctly When You Start Windows
==========================
Some of you have written in about a problem with your Windows XP startup sound. The sound doesn't play smoothly and it's broken up or choppy. Microsoft realizes this is a problem seen in Windows XP. Seems like it's a sound hardware issue and not a problem with XP itself. The solution is to disable the startup sound! Learn more about the issue here:

Possible Fixes for the Windows XP Startup Sound Problem

Metro Computers 'N More wrote in with a tip on how to fix the Windows XP startup sound problem:
"I found that increasing the PCI latency timer setting in the system BIOS fixed the start sound problem on an Asus motherboard with a Creative Sound Blaster 128 Card. The default setting is usually around 32. I increased it in steps of 2 until the sound smoothed out, it takes about a dozen restarts or so but it works. Hope it can help someone with this little headache."
Mark Dell also has some advice on getting the sound to work:
"I have heard many people complain about sound problems with Windows XP. I have heard this mostly with the "Sound Blaster Live!" family of sound cards. This problem seems to be due to the fact that the drivers for these cards basically were not designed to have their IRQ shared with other devices. If you check out the Creative Newsgroups, they all say that Creative's latest released drivers from November 2001 do not fix the problem. However there are drivers available on Compaq's FTP Site (<ftp.compaq.com>) that seem to work properly 98% of the time. Microsoft attributes the excessive IRQ sharing to ACPI. The other solution to this problem is to disable/remove ACPI & manually set your IRQs. I have seen systems with ACPI configured with many things sharing one IRQ & several other IRQs unused..."

J.D. wrote in with a creative approach to fixing the startup sound problem in Windows XP:
"I discovered quite by accident that the quality of my startup sound improved greatly when I turned off the SRS Wow effects in the Windows media player (rev 8.x) that comes with XP! It even reduced problems I was having in some games! I'm not joking! I appears to be active to some degree even when the player is not visibly running. To turn the SRS Wow Effects on /off. Start the media player. On the menu select View -> Now Playing Tools -> SRS Wow Effects. The window view will change and you will see a button for on/off. Now I only run the SRS wow effects when actively running and listening to the Windows Media Player."
cheers

What was the last thing you did before this problem occurs? Can you play WAV files?
Go to "My Computer" -> "Properties" -> "Hardware" -> "Device Manager". See if any hardware has an "!" mark on it, especially your sound card. If yes, reinstall your sound card driver.
Sometime if we keep on uninstalling programs, certain programs can delete the audio codecs as well. Go to "Control Panel" -> "Sound and audio device". Move to "Hardware" tab. Select "Audio codec" and click on "Properties". Inside, click on "Properties" tab.
The most important codec is "Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC". If you found out that it is missing, you need to reinstall Windows XP.
