Yeah it sounds like either the sound card has developed a problem or where it connects to the machine is dirty or faulty.
The Crazy One
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsHi,
My laptop sound has gone crazy!!!! If I am logged on to the local account everything works well, however as soon as I log on to the Network account and try listening to any sound (CD Audio, Web broadcasts, etc..) after about 15 minutes no more sound.
Following a reboot everything is OK again (at least in local) for a while, but each reboot lowers the time of available sound in Network account. It seemed that it could be overheating, but then it made no sense that in Local it worked without problems. I thought about the driver being currupt, but again how can it work in local account if the driver is currupt??
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Peter,
I need to ask some questions first:
-is this laptop in a docking station?
-you say that you are logged on a local network, is that like cable internet, dsl or a home network?
-I am guessing that this does not happen when you are not logged on to the network?
-did your system come with XP installed?
-has this happened all along, or did you just install some thing that caused it?
-are you using media player to play the music, or a third party CD player?
I bet it is your IRQ's. your network card is sharing an interrupt with your sound card. the system works fine until a call is made to both at the same time, once that happens the system loses its workability.

Hope this was helpful.
Hi Lee (Gobroski),
No the machine is not connected with a Docking station. The connection part is that the sytem was configured (by the company) with Network (in the office) or This computer (off line) accounts as standard. In the beginning it only happened when the machine was in the office, however it has now started acting up (since yesterday) in the "This computer" account too.
It isn't just audio CD that fail it is sound full stop, although the sytem had a virus and the IT helpdesk got their grubby mitts on the laptop and that is when the problem started (it has since grown to be a bigger problem over time).
I like the idea of an IRQ cnflict as they decided to install a mass of updates and pointless software at the same time as removing the virus that got through our gateway antivirus (I still don't understant how it got through three different antivirus applications (Email, system and LAN) but that is not my problem), I will check that tomorrow morning.
Thanks and other help following this update would be appreciated.

Peter,
It does sound like an IRG issue. I find it odd that the sound on the "user account" not hooked to the network would be acting up unless it is attached to the internet via a Network adapter, or modem... What kind of Laptop is this... you may have to do a system restore, Saving all your files, then running the manufacture supplied disk to reinstall all of your system. I would of course back up all your data first. Your IT crew may not have that disk…<tragic> what kind of AV are you using?
Try running in a selective start up, and see if your sound works better that way?
Start -> run -> MSCONFIG -> uncheck “Load startup Items” then apply and ok. Then restart. If your sound works them, it could be a conflict with a running application…
Good luck,
Lee
I checked the IRQ's and the modem (built in to the Dell laptop) is sharing the same IRQ and is in conflict. I have now disabled it and testing to see if this helps - Fingers crossed!!
I have no idea why this could have suddenly become an issue on a 6 month old laptop, but I can sort that out later, finding the problem is the hard part!!
Will keep you posted, as it is testing right now, if all goes well will close this call this evening.
Thanks
Peter
Hi Lee,
Sound has worked all afternoon here in the house, will check briefly in the office in the morning and then get this question closed.
Thanks (as it looks like you have hit the nail on the head)
Peter
P.S. I have posted another question concerning a friends computer he asked me to look at... Error shown "Driver is enabled but has not been started" See the question for more details - Any help???
Hi Lee,
The link to the post is: http://www.experts-exchang
This has all the details, I can say it isn't a driver problem though as I have added a new sound card and new drivers to the machine with same error.
Thanks

Sound now died in local account too.... Ahhhhhh
Guess I need to start checking the driver or actual sound card.
I am still open to any suggestions that anyone might have as a solution...
Thanks
Peter
