Question

PartitionMagic won't recognize existing partitions

Asked by: Toddyus

I have a 28GB disk with one primary partition and one extended partition with 3 logical drives -- broken down in the following:

Primary drive (D:) - 2.0 GB
Logical (C:) - 2.0 GB
(E:) - 8 GB
(F:) - 16 GB

Windows sits on drive D. All drives show up in Windows Explorer, however, when I go into PartitionMagic, it shows the primary drive of 2.0 GB and unallocated space of 26GB.

I want to expand the Windows drive into the C partition, which is currently unused. I don't want to lose the data I have on the other disks, though.

Can I get PM to see these partitions without wiping the drive clean and starting over?

You are running PM v7 or later, aren't you?

Have you tried downloading PowerQuest's most recent updates?

Yes, I'm running PM v7. A couple other things: I'm running Windows XP (I know I'm in the XP category, but realized I should be explicit.) My primary (Windows) partition is FAT and my extended partition and logical drives are all FAT32. Not sure if that makes a difference. PM is only seeing the FAT drive, but says it's FAT32.

I have not run the update. I will try that. My bigger problem right now, is I only have 2MB free on my Windows drive. I can't even remove PM. Windows recommended disk space guidelines are misguiding to say the least. Live and learn.

that's probabbly why it won't let you resize the partition, you need so much free space to resize it.

Windows recommends a MINIMUM, not an actual operational functional level.  Now ya know.  Delete temp and TempInternet files and move your MyDocs to another partition... at least long enough to work with you D: partition.  Also move outlook.pst if using it... can be very big.  Empty recycle bin.  Look for any other big files that may be candidates for moving, e.g. any .avi or .mp3 stuff.

If you have system restore enabled, that can take up a great amount of disk space.  Try disabling system restore.

Open the system control panel, click the "system restore" tab and check "turn off system restore on all my drives"

good idea about sys restore, but be sure to reenable it after you're done...easy to forget until you need it X months later.

I moved my swap file to a different drive, which freed up about 25% of the Windows drive. That problem is temporarily solved. However, that doesn't solve my original problem, which is that PartitionMagic won't recognize my existing partitions and it says my FAT16 drive is a FAT32. Perhaps I need to simply backup my data and start over with a fresh format. What do you think?

by: tqmbillPosted on 2002-12-11 at 11:54:27ID: 7567994

I don't know why PM won't recognize partitions, esp. if WinExpl can see them.

Have you tried uninstall PM and reinstall?  Did you run the PM update?

Have you tried contacting PowerQuest?

You might also try running check disk on all your partitions:
chkdsk c: /f

A couple of other ideas, I've had the same problem with disk space before and converting the FAT32 drives to NTFS has given me more space both times.  Also, you might consider using the PM boot disks, to do the resize / repartition, that's the best way I've found to use PM.  IMHO  Also, there is a new version of PM 8.0, but the reviews aren't all that great, when running out of Windows.

Hope this helps
