Question

help with service pack 1

Asked by: accessxp

After downloading the new update from the microsoft website to my laptop, and restarting my computer I got the following error :" The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link SHLWAPI.dll" No programs were loaded at startup. I tried to boot from an ms-dos diskette, and then to reinstall shlwapi.dll in c:\windows\system32 but to no avail. Also, I tried to start in safe mode, again, the same error. Then I tried to start in safe mode with command prompt and install shlwapi.dll to system32, again all my efforts were to no avail. I have the system recovery cds that came with my laptop, but I dont want to lose my files. Reintalling the OS will mean that I will lose all my files, isnt it ? Any suggestions???

I seems to me for my research that this is a internet explorer error... I would try installing ie6 sp1 and then see what happens.

You didnt say that the computer never started windows xp (i go back and read your inital posting... you mention nothing about it).. however....

I have managed to blow up a couple windows xp systems installing service pack 1 (MNAY reasons!!)...

But at this time, I would start the system in dos (if possible... use ntfs dos if needed), and rerun setup from the cab files.

Dont run the recovery cd, but rather get access to windows xp cab files...

The reinstall will be a repair install...

The boot disks will be fine, but you will need the xp cabs from somewhere... Should be on the harddrive

all will be fine!

If your laptop came with windows XP, the recovery discs will be absolutely fine. That is exactly what they are for, they recover your system...files and settings intact. Re-installing the Operating System will not delete all your files unless you specifically choose to erase them. Evn if you do choose to erase them by mistake, you will get a WARNING message asking if you really want to erase the data. Windows XP will install or re-install at it's original location by default C:>WINNT32

All the other methods of recovry assume that you do not have recovery discs. Use them, that is what you paid for.

Hi.
I just experience the exact same situation a few days ago.
I installed the sp1, was able to launch XP but after the logon a error message saying that a entrypoint was missing in the shlwapi.dll. No explore - no desktop- but I solved the problem this way.

Seems that the sp1 version of shlwapi.dll wasn't installed during sp1-update process. The new version of the module is in the folder %systemroot%\servicepackfiles\i386.

1 .Reboot info "safe-mode" and logon (you'll get the same error message).
2.Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete (Task Man) > File > Run >cmd.exe (opens a command window)
3. cd %systemroot%\system32\
4. Ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi_sick.dll
5. Copy ..\servicepackfiles\i386\shlwapi.dll
6. reboot and I was running again.

Hope this works for you too...

I just had the same problem with Windows 2000. After downloading the security patch and rebooting, the system would come up and I could log in. However, my Start bar would flash on and back off the screen very fast; the only thing I could do is bring up the Task Manager. Attempting a "New Task (Run)" of anything gave the message box:

"The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link SHLWAPI.dll"

I got the same problem attempting to 1) reboor wih previous profile, 2) boot with Safe Mode.

Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt at least got me where I could look around. I found three instances of shlwapi.dll in the \WINNT tree: ServicePackFiles\i386, System32, and System32\dllcache. What surprised me was the one in the System32 dubdirectory was a year older than the other two. However, attempting to copy the newest (and largest) to the \WINNT\System32 directory gave me the error that the file was in use and locked.

I formatted a diskette, created separate directories for each of the three instances, and copied the three to the diskette. Then I got out my Win2K Setup Diskettes (You have made an emergency set, haven't you?), loaded the first of the four, and rebooted.

When I got through the fourth diskette, I answered all the prompts, chose "R" to repair and "C" for the console mode. Then I copied the newest instance to the \WINNT\System32 directory, and exited.

The system automatically rebooted, and everything came back up.

I'm having the same problem as s8smith847.  However, nothing I've done results in the problem being fixed.  If you read this s8smith847, could you contact me by email?  I'd like your copy of the shlwapi.dll file.  None of the copies I have seem to work.

I know I'm grasping at straws, but I dodn't want to reinstall W2K.  I'd loose alot of valuble work.  Yes, it is backed up, but would be a royal pain to get back.

I had the same problem this morning with a Windows 2K box with SP3.  Some service packs were installed last night, then the computer was shut down.  This morning, it had this problem.

The computer was still communicating on the LAN, so I copied shlwapi.dll from another Win2K sp3 box to c:\ on the bad box through the admin share (\\compname\c$).  Then, I booted the bad box off a Windows 2000 install CD.  Picked repair, then manual repair with the recovery console.  Logged in as the local admin, then copied shlwapi.dll from the root to c:\winnt\system32.  It boots fine now.
