Software DVD Player Problems

When try to play a DVD in my computer, Windows tells me that "Software DVD Player has encountered a problem and needs to close." It then asks me if I want to send a error report to Microsoft.  This problem occurs regardless of the player (Windows Media, WinDvd, etc...). I noticed that the DVD plays for about 1 or 2 seconds before the error message pops up.  I am running Windows XP Professional with Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM installed.  If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please let me know.

Actually, I did try installing PowerDVD after posting this message and I found that indeed, it did solve my DVD problems.  Anyone know why this is the case?  Anyways, PowerDVD is my #1 DVD player, and I would highly recommend it.
