The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. XP Home Service Pack 1 -- IE 6 Service Pack 1 --

We recently had this problem from a user that we had just built a system for for christmas.

When the system left the shop it was in optimal condition of course, but after his daughter got ahold of it during the christmas break we had to go do a house-call for him.

Simply put, this system had the latest patches etc for XP Home , and IE 6.

The problem/bug was such that no matter what anyone did, the browser window would close immediatly after opening (i think it was actually after FINISHING the loading of the homepage)

No matter what we did we could'nt stop the window from closing again, it was like clockwork.

We tried the usual, and the not-so usual fixes.

I personally spent around 3-4 hours straight trying to fix this problem, and my colleage spending about the same amount of time.

It ended up that I had to reinstall windows, not a big deal. But I like to know how to fix problems and not just pass them over.

So if anyone has seen this, and fixed it. Let me know.

Keep in mind all the general stuff we tried from installing/reinstalling IE itself via registry edits so as to disable XP from seeing it installed, to long winded DOS commands required to run a repair on IE.

The only state we could get the system into that it wouldn't 'crash' close immediatly, was safe mode. But alas that was no help, as it didn't pinpoint anything in particular that we could see. No running app's or background services to hang it up.

This is not urgent then, but am interested in the answer for my own files incase we run into this again.
