Question

Start up and shut down problems with WinXP

Asked by: Ruddi

I have Windows XP SP1, but the problem was around before SP1.

When I start up Windows the Explorer windows automaticly comes up at the Program folder. I close it with the X.
When I shut down Windows a message comes up and tells me that Explorer.exe didn't shut down correctly. The "time-line" ticks away but when it's comes to the end windows don't shut the program. I have to click the Shut down button. This is annoying as h*ll!

Red-lettered items will be removed and backed up
Blue-lettered items are merely usage tracks.

Spyware is grwoing as a major cause of system crashes as well as perpetuatung further problems, keeping pace with viruses for notoriety.

Hope this somehow helps!

I'm trying the SpyBot at work now. Is it safe to remove all the red marked? Exmples: Vloading, Xupiter, C2.lop and MoneyTree

Do you have a copy of explorer.exe in your startup folder, or in the registry that is forcing explorer to open during the boot process?

by: tedskyPosted on 2003-01-29 at 00:12:52ID: 7835918

Absolutely!
(That's the point)
And Xupiter has to be one of the most devious Spyware entities to come along since TopText a few years back.
C2Lop isn't much better.

Leave all the blue-lettered items as they are - these are simply usage tracks, which are actually helpful, if you think about it.

Glad to see some improvement appears on the way!

The fact still remains that a virus might be toying with your system, as well.  The "explorer" starting on its own is a clue that if it's not spyware, it may well be a more infectuous virus (such as Nimda, which appears to have made a resurgence recently).

No Explorer in the Starup folder.

by: tedskyPosted on 2003-01-29 at 00:19:13ID: 7835947

The Xupiter item is classed as a "hijacking" spyware or advertising "adbot", btw.

by: RuddiPosted on 2003-01-29 at 00:28:02ID: 7835974

I have F-Secure Virus program. I will check that it is up to date aswell.

by: dew_associatesPosted on 2003-01-29 at 00:30:08ID: 7835981

Check your registry too Ruddi and make sure explorer execute is where it belongs and not in multiple locations. Do you recall when this first began? Was it after an update or installation of software?

by: tedskyPosted on 2003-01-29 at 00:30:31ID: 7835983

Sounds like a plan - what were the total number of "issues" that SBSD found, btw?  This will include the usage tracks as well as the spybots, but at keast it's a gauge.

(Hi CO - I think Ruddi's been inundated with responses ;)

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-01-29 at 12:27:09ID: 7840684

Hi Ted

Ruddi

Part of the reason Explorer is opening to the specific folder is because Explorer didn't fully shutdown so it leaves a flag in the registry to reopen the folder when the system restarts. Use the following registry hack for now to see if this will prevent Explorer from opening on the next startup. The problem with Explorer could stem from this registry setting possibly being corrupted. So use this as test and see what happens.

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1222/

This option controls whether Windows will attempt to re-open any folders that were already open when the system was last shutdown.

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "PersistBrowsers" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced]
Value Name: PersistBrowsers
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = do not re-open, 1 = re-open windows)

by: tedskyPosted on 2003-01-29 at 12:33:38ID: 7840746

That could well be the bottom line, CO.
Clearly there were other issues (ie Spyware), but ultimately this may bring Ruddi back to "full speed ahead" mode <smile>.

Ok everybody. The problem is solved!

I use SpyBot Search&Destroy and the problem is gone! No Program folder is starting up, and XP is shutting down as it should . So my pionts goes to "tedsky".

Thanx a 1000 times for all your help everybody.

by: tedskyPosted on 2003-01-29 at 23:24:17ID: 7843897

From this end, you are quite welcome.
It's been my experience from doing cable internet installations 8-10 times/day that over the past 2 years this advertising nonsense has become quite the annoyance.

Be sure to keep the SBSD utility up-to-date by running the Online Update within just before running the utility.
This will ensure that the latest bot-tracking signature files will be in place to deal with newer adbots.

Best of luck in 2003!
