The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Win XP Install Problem.... On so many levels.....

Let me preface this with: "I AM NOT A NEWBIE"  ;)

My wifes machine began to act up last week, culminating in a "Primary Master Hard Disk Failure" message.

So I pulled the old drive out, and threw in a new 20gb Western Digital.

The system is:

-Epox EB-BX5 MB
-MSI MX440 Video Card
-1x 256mb 2x 128mb PC133 Memory
-zip650 cd/cdrw drive

I have stripped the system down to the above in troubleshooting, these with the exception of the zip650 have run on the machine for the past year without issue.

On new HD installation, bios recognized fine, win XP cd boots fine, format drive went fine, then after setup finished copying files, and the system rebooted, it began setup and I got a message to the likings of:

C:\i386\asms Error message:The parameter is incorrect.

So I rebooted, this time when copying files from the CD it crashed before getting to the disk selection. I thought maybe a bad CD, so tried a different XP disk. Same failure at the same place.
So I tried boot disks. This got me further, then it failed the format, reboot, second time (quick format) worked, but same parameter incorrect message. So I tried again, and again, one time I got a critical stop error setup was copying files, but that hasn't happened again.

After about 6 times trying different things, I swapped out the HD with a net Maxtor 40gb, the same probems though, format partition fails, quick format works, but install fails, as far as I ever get is that Parameter Incorrect error.

Has anyone ever encountered these problems?

The other other thing that this machine did before it died was it had a creative 52X CD-rom in it, one day it started opening and closing itself randomly. So when I went to rebuild the machine, I replaced the drive with the zip650.

Any Ideas? PLEASE HELP!
