Question

Can I shut off auto-online error reporting in XP Pro?

Asked by: pdub

After years of running a home network with mostly W98, I got a new P4 Dell w/ XP Pro. The biggest thing to adjust to is that this thing phones home for EVERYTHING!  Media Player is now basically spyware; half the MS Apps call home when started.  I responded by putting a cheap firewall on each machine to make them ask permission first; MS seems intent on turning me into a rental tenant rather than a software purchaser.

Perhaps the most irritating of these is that when an app locks up -- as often as not over being denied the right to call home -- and you try to cancel it with Task Manager, you get a Report/Don't Report Error dialog box, but it won't accept the Don't Report choice, so you're as good as bluescreened if you don't unlock the firewall and let it call, restarting is the only other option, or maybe I missed something.

Is mine an unusual experience?  Is there a way to switch off the Auto Error Report and just dump the task?

Open the System applet from Control Panel, and select the Advanced tab. Near the bottom, click the Error Reporting button.

You can enable or disable Error Reporting, or when you leave it enabled, you can specify which programs you want to exclude from this feature.

pr19,

Gotta say it SOUNDS convincing, but so does "Don't send report".  I've already put in the change, I'll be back with the points in a day or two.

pdub the program you're looking for is called xp antispy, I believe it's freeware, or cheap shareware. It will disable all microsoft's little report back services, including automaticly checking for updates. It tells you what it's going to do, and has worked great for me.
