XP Pro & Win2000 on same machine

Asked by: akyriacou

Hi
Have just purchased a new PC with XP Pro already installed, this is my preferred OS, but i also need to have win2000 installed on same machine - can someone please advise the best way to do this? Must I format HD (if so how?), install Wiin2000 first, and thereafter install XP Pro again on a new partition ?

Any help greatly appreciated

I think if you boot your computer with your Win2000 CD, during the set up, it will prompt you to choose whether or not you want to install another operating system.  However, there is an easier way to do this using a program called PARTITION MAGIC, by PowerQuest.  http://www.powerquest.com They have a great program that does it for you, step by step, real simple to use.

Thanks for reply. I dont get option to install win2000, i just get error message saying its an older version OS and i cant go back..

NOOOOO  DO NOT USE PARTITION MAGIC!!  Its shite!

do as stated, boot from a win2k cd, and select to install windows on the same partition as XP.  It will detect XP and ask you if you wish to leave the exsisting OS or partition untouched, you need to do this, and it should create a boot option for you.

Preferably, boot from the win XP cd and reformat the drive into 2 partions, install win2K FIRST on the primary partition, and then install XP on the second.  It will still created the Boot option menu.  You may have to right click on the "My computer" icon in windows XP, then goto "Properties" and select the "Advanced" tab then hit the "startup and recovery" setting button and tick the "Time to desplay Operating Systems" box for the menu to show on boot.

Time consuming BUT its better than using the shoddy third party software like Partition Tragic.

I have this exact setup.  It works for me.

Are you booting the CD from in windows? Or are you setting your system BIOS to boot from CD?  Because I know this to work, you CAN install 2000 over XP as a multi boot system.

Best to do the reinstall procedure I stated in my previous post.

Haha, nice one with the Partition Tragic, but I've used it for 2 years now and it's one of the best programs.  I don't see why you would dislike it.  It formats your hard drive, partitions, installs new OS, the works!

in my 7 years expereance in IT I have had nothing but greef from partition magic in the long run. especialy with win2k and installing on a reasonabbly large HDD, and pre SP2 win2k CD's, you can loose upto 18gb of storage.
also, some virus protection programs see the header information that partition magic adds to the drive as a potentually dangerous boot sector virus.

But if you use it, and it 'aint caused you any problems, then good luck to ya, but the PM CD does make a rather nice tea coaster in our office.

You already have XP installed on your computer and you want to install 2000, in order to do it right you should :
1. Delete all partition in your current HD.
2. Make partitions ( the number on the partition depends on  the number of OS you want to install )
3. Install the OS in this sequence :
    a. Install WIN2000 in the first partition
    b. Install WINXP in the second partition.
4. That should do it

Thanks for all above so far ,but a couple of followup q's.
Firstly is there any reason to install WIN2K on the first partition (is it must do?)  Reason I ask is that i have created a new partition using Partition Magic on second part of my HD, and though ive not as yet installed WIN2k on this partition was wondering if it was OK to go ahead and install all apps on current XP PRO on first partition

Thanks again

no.. windows 2k MUST be installed first, to make it easer, there are procedures to install 2k AFTER... BUT its a bit complicated and in the long run its cleaner to do it w2k first then win XP

here are some referances of problems -
