Question

I need to get rid of Windows Messenger!!!

Asked by: mcgeorge40

Hi.  My wife installed windows messenger (it's like an MSN-related chat thing) on my computer, before I got her one of her own.  (thank God)

Anyway, now I have this stupid application running in the background all of the time.  I want to uninstall it, but it is not in the "remove programs" control panel's list.

I want to make sure I uninstall it correctly though, so I'm assuming I need to use an uninstall program...

Can someone help me rid my computer of this cancer?!?!?

Thanks,

Frustrated

Go into: C:\Program Files\Messenger. Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF" This does not slow down Outlook Express or hinder system performance.

or

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/989/

This tweak is used to remove MSN Instant Messenger functionality and integration from Outlook Express.

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "Hide Messenger" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This tweak should also remove AOL Instant Messenger 5 integration.

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express]
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)

If you are running on windows XP (Home or pro), install Server Pack 1 from MS and then you can go to the control panel add / remove programs and simply uninstall MS Messenger.  Is far as I know, MS had to add this do to some of the court findings (the ability to unload all MS items from the O/S).

These steps are for uninstalling Windows Messenger:

1) Open the file "c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf" on your computer.

2) Under the section marked "[Components]" look for the line which says:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7"

3) Delete the word "hide" on that line to make it say:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7"

4) Now go back to Add/Remove Windows programs and you will find Windows Messenger there for you to uninstall.

2) Click Run
3) Copy and paste this command into the Run dialog

4) RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

5) Reboot and Windows Messenger is removed cleanly

Don't bother yourself with registry editing if you are not familiar with it.

1.     Click Start and click the Control Panel.
2.     In the Control Panel window, make sure you're in Classic View. If you're in Category View, click the link on the left side of the window that says Switch to Classic View.
3.     Double click on the Administrative Tools entry in the Control Panel.
4.     In the Administrative Tools window, double click on the Services entry.
5.     Scroll through the list of entries in the Services window and find the one named Messenger. Double click on the Messenger entry.
6.     In the Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box, click the Stop button. You'll see a clock displayed while the service stops.
7.     Click the down-arrow in the Startup type drop down list box and select the Manual entry. Click Apply and then click OK.

cheers
Pete

Thanks everyone.  The answer from boyrage was the easiest to understand, and only took 2 seconds.

(No messing with the registry)

I'm no "techy", so this was best for me.

Instead of going through all that messing in the registry and maybe deleting the wrong file in windows you can simply download a small program call WINDOWS MESSENGER REMOVER that will remove all traces of windows messenger from xp. the website address is www.pchelplive.com and requires you to register free and then download the program.
