Question

Error: Installing Windows XP!

Asked by: daggoth_666

Everytime i try to install XP I get similar fatal errors to these.
I had XP, then I reformatted after some hardware issues, which i resolved.
I got these errors so i installed 98SE, no troubles.
Now i am trying to get XP up and running cause networking, and sharing my ADSL, is so much easier on it.
(Please, I don't need anyone to tell me to go back to 98 or choose a different OS, i need someone to help me in finding a solution to this problem thanks)

The MS Article says:

To rename the %WinDir%\System32\Catroot2 folder at a command prompt, follow these steps:
While you are in setup and while the error message is displayed on the screen, press SHIFT+F10 to start a command prompt. At the command prompt, type cd\windows\system32\, and then press ENTER.
Type rename catroot2 catold, press ENTER, and then restart the computer. Try again to finish the upgrade.

If only it was this easy.  I have tried this many times unfortunately. I have also tried deleting the folder completely.

I have also tried using my CD drive instead of DVD drive too.
This didn't work either ;)

Something appears to be defective on the CD disk or the CD Drive.

I think I agree with CrazyOne.
Borrow someone else's XP CD.  The only difference between XP CD's is the CD Key.
Use his disk and your CD Key.  If it works then copy his CD.  :)

At work we bought 12 XP CD Keys.  We use the same XP CD to install all of them.

Don't use a Burner to install Windows XP!  My son has a TDK Burner (Supposed to be the BEST!).  It won't even install XP!  But I installed it with a 16x antique from an old XT.

The Burners work great once you have Windows up and they have their own DRIVER!

Try resetting the BIOS to the defaults.

This behavior can occur if the computer has an outdated basic input/output system (BIOS).  flash your bios with latest bios from manufacturer.

It is not true that all CDs are created equal. Microsoft batches them; not uncommon to find that one retail CD won't take another's serial key. Then there is OEM disks, VLK discs and MSDN discs. When your company bought the 12 licenses you got one key that can be installed 12 times.

Spot on CrazyOne.  Once i removed the CD drive, which i forgot to mention was a burner (sorry, i was a bit stretched for time), and replaced it with the old cd drive it installed cleanly.
