The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Partition Magic Error 117 after Linux install on XP machine

Asked by lawrence_76 in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: partition, magic, 117, error

I had WinXP Pro to begin with. Decided to install Linux.  Made a Linux ext3 partition using partition magic.  Also created an F: driver of FAT32 kind of 44 MB size
for boot magic.

While installing redhat it complained that it needed a "/boot" and the current partition wasnt cutting it. So I let redhat remove the linux partition and put its own form of linux partition.
When it came to boot loader, I chose "no boot loader" so that Boot Magic alone handles that.

After Linux was installed, WinXP Pro loaded cleanly but BootMagic did not find any Linux partition. I tried opening Partition Magic and got "ERROR 117: Partition drive letter not identified" and it wouldnt start.

I checked partition info and seemed like the F: drive (FAT32), the one I created for Bootmagic,  had errors.
Warning #113: Logical starting at 23481423 overlaps enclosing extended volume.
Error #114: Logical starting at 23481423 is not one head away from EPBR.

In panic I reformatted the F: partition in the vain hope that Partition Magic would now start and I would be able to do something.

Unfortunately, Partition Magic still has that error 117 and also now I cannot uninstall BootMagic because it keeps looking for the earlier install. :-(

When I reboot, I get an error that it could not find boot magic. But it does boot up WinXP Pro when I press a key. Thats the bright spot..

The issue still is, how do I recover the rest of the partitions so I can dual boot WinXP Pro and Linux.

I know it is a long question but I would really really appreciate your help.
Below is what I see from "Partition Info" a tool that comes with partition Magic.
