Question

"Autocheck cannot be found. Skipping autocheck"

Asked by: newberryeagle

In scanning my disk, it said to run chkdsk with /F (fix) option...

I tried to run chkdsk and could do it in fix mode.... I found another question on this website with same problem... followed instructions given to go in to Open Registry Editor etc., to run auto check upon boot up.... and when I re-booted, it now says "autocheck cannot be found.  Skipping autocheck."

Try this

Start > Run sfc /scannow

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-07-24 at 21:52:21ID: 9001221

or get out your XP CD and insert it

Start > Run cmd

COPY TheCDDriveLetter:\i386\AUTOCHK.EXE C:\Windows\System32

by: sramesh2kPosted on 2003-07-24 at 21:52:44ID: 9001223

expand if from XP Cd-rom

click start | run | and "CMD"
type "expand X:\i386\autochk.ex_ c:\windows\system32\autochk.exe"

hey CO, we are on same track :)

by: newberryeaglePosted on 2003-07-24 at 22:01:07ID: 9001263

I followed:

expand if from XP Cd-rom

click start | run | and "CMD"
type "expand X:\i386\autochk.ex_ c:\windows\system32\autochk.exe"   and it says "No destination specified"

or, I saw the other that said copy it, but then where do I put it?

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-07-24 at 22:03:03ID: 9001271

Hehehe yeah looks like we are :>)

hey sramesh2k a little tip, when using the expand use the -r switch it will automatically rename the compressed file

expand -r X:\i386\autochk.ex_ c:\windows\system32\

And in this case AUTOCHK.EXE isn't a compressed file because the XP Installation uses this file to scan the disk during the installation. :>)

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-07-24 at 22:03:32ID: 9001278

COPY TheCDDriveLetter:\i386\AUTOCHK.EXE C:\Windows\System32

by: newberryeaglePosted on 2003-07-24 at 22:15:00ID: 9001350

I copied the file as you said - it found another file under that name - Override?  I said yes and it said the file was copied.  However, then when I again tried to re-boot, it said autocheck program not found. Skipping autocheck

try placing a copy of the file in the c:\ and c:\windows as well. checck if that helps.

I am wonder if it will work if you do this

Boot to the Recovery Console and then run this command

chkdsk /r

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314058
To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:
Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-07-24 at 22:35:03ID: 9001464

Aslo try one more time to run the chkdsk

Start > Run chkdsk /r

say yes when it ask to schedule it at next boot
reboot
and see what happens

Sometime this will clear out things the XP is misreading.

Okay, I tried to boot to Recovery Console... and did, but then couldn't enter command chkdsk /r... it only asked which windows installation would you like to log onto?  (?????).... so, I then ran chkdsk /r again (scheduled at the reboot) and that seems to have worked (I'll have to scan the entire drive again overnight and see if it still says there's a problem)... but, I checked all the files that I copied the autochk.exe to and they are all there, so I don't know why it continues to say autochk* program cannot be found.... would it have anything to do with what I entered into the BootExecute:

*autocheck autochk /p \??\C:
autocheck autochk*

Anyway, I hope it really did work and thanks to both of you :)

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!

xp can't find the autochk.exe even though i copied into C:\, C:\windows, and C:\windows\system32.  The computer just boots to the error message and then restarts (cycles).

Additional info:  i just fixed a problem with xp not being able to find ntoskrnl and config\system by copying the files from the xp pro cd.

any help would be appreciated!!!

rweragoda,
Maybe your Windows partition is "NTFS Hidden".
Have you been playing around with partitioning software, or dual boot Linux?

All you (may) have to do, is "unhide" C:\
Three methods come to mind:
FDISK (Windows 98 boot floppy/similar) - make XP part "active"
Powerquest Recovery CDs - make XP stop hiding itself...
Recovery console - i'm sure there's something in there designed for this... :D
