Hey, I have a friend who's computer was formated by accident. It is a compaq and they sent it in to be fixed (the comma key fell off) and they got it back formated. Now they need to get the data back. I know there are tools to get it back but I don't know which are the best. Can someone please tell me what a good, free data recovery tool is out there?

   Once you format the hard disk, it is very hard to get the data back. You can try this free data recovery tool, PC Inspector

Ontrack may be able to get your data back, but it will cost you money. www.ontrack.com

Who did your friend send the computer to?  Formatted by accident???  I would advise your friend to make the place that did the repair responsible.  Why would your friend send the entire computer if only the keyboard needed to be repaired?

It was a laptop and they sent it to compaq.

Then compaq should be taking care of the data recovery.  They screwed up.  Tell your friend next time to do Dell - he could almost replace the laptop keyboard himself (I just feplaced one a few weeks ago) and didn't even have to format the drive :)

Yah thats what I said compaq should have to recover the data but you know how costomer support is with people like that. Ill recomend dell to them thanks. Also another problem came with it, now all of a sudden the modem wont dial up. Could it be because compaq did somthing, there were settings on the laptop that got erased in the format, or it was banged around while being shipped?

Sorry that war1 never stopped by but if I were not shekerra and I were war1 I would have told you that Compaq owes your friend bigtime.  Compaq needs to retrieve all of your friends data since changing a comma key does not constitute reinstalling the OS :)

So restated _ you accepted war1 for the answer - but the answer that war1 should have given you would have been to have Compaq restore your friend's data period.  Your friend should not BE RESPONSIBLE for restoring data that COMPAQ destroyed by reformatting your firnds HDD.  So War1 should have stated this fact but failed to do thus...
