I've got my only connection set as default, and set to dial whenever a connection does not exist, but it still won't work, any other idea's?

Browse All TopicsWhen I try to send/recieve email thru outlook, or start AOL instant messenger, or any other program that used to automatically start a connection when running in my old OS (Win ME) they just show errors stating that a connection could not be established, however if I open outlook and click on an email which is written in html, it will dial and show the page in the preview pane. I used to have my DUN connection listed in the start up folder on the start menu in ME, and it would connect fine after the drivers etc. had loaded, in XP if I try it, it will fail because my connection hardware seems to take a lot longer to initialize, I'm in the UK using Freeserve Broadband (DSL) and where as in ME it would take seconds for the modem to establish communications with the server on start up, with XP it seems to take a minute or more. The compy is exactly the same spec as when running ME, ME decided to delete itself one day, so I thought XP couldn't be (much) worse to use, the system is...

Someone gimme some help, I'm getting sick of having to start a connection before I open outlook (used to have Outlook in startup too)

Well the security shouldn't be an isssue. If XP is using NTFS and it is the PRO version I bet you have Simple File Sharing turned on which is why the security tab isn't there.
If you want to turn off Simple File Sharing
Click Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View.
Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and un-check Use Simple File Sharing.
Click OK.

Click the connections tab
Click the connection you want as the default
Click the Set default button
Select the Dial whenever....
