Question

Programs (Outlook etc.) won't open internet explorers dialer

Asked by: C_130_Herc

When I try to send/recieve email thru outlook, or start AOL instant messenger, or any other program that used to automatically start a connection when running in my old OS (Win ME) they just show errors stating that a connection could not be established, however if I open outlook and click on an email which is written in html, it will dial and show the page in the preview pane. I used to have my DUN connection listed in the start up folder on the start menu in ME, and it would connect fine after the drivers etc. had loaded, in XP if I try it, it will fail because my connection hardware seems to take a lot longer to initialize, I'm in the UK using Freeserve Broadband (DSL) and where as in ME it would take seconds for the modem to establish communications with the server on start up, with XP it seems to take a minute or more. The compy is exactly the same spec as when running ME, ME decided to delete itself one day, so I thought XP couldn't be (much) worse to use, the system is...

I've got my only connection set as default, and set to dial whenever a connection does not exist, but it still won't work, any other idea's?

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-08-01 at 12:43:03ID: 9051170

That is odd because if I open Outlook Express it will auto dial. hmmm

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 12:45:43ID: 9051187

in ME it worked fine, for some reason Outlook, AIM, Norton AV live update, basically any program that uses a connection other than IE (apart from outlooks preview pane) will not open a connection, not even the dialler window appears.

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 12:48:46ID: 9051204

Is there some check box hidden away somewhere that limits the specified connection to only be used for web browsing/internet explorer use only? I seem to remember seeing that option somewhere in ME, but never played with it.

Try this

Open Outlook go to
Tools > Accounts
Select View or change existing email accounts
Click Next
Click the Change button
Click the More Settings button
Click the Connections tab and play around with those settings

Ok, just set up an email account in outlook express, disconnected and tried checking the mail, outlook express connected, but outlook wont, neither will any other progs i have listed above. :-(

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 12:56:57ID: 9051260

i've just tried changing the connection setting for my email accounts from using IE's dailler to a specific connection and it's just worked, so that is 1 option for my mail, the problem is, i cannot specify how to connect thru AIM or live update etc. so they still will not connect automatically.

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-08-01 at 13:05:35ID: 9051322

If you are referring to Nortons Live update open Norton and the click the LiveUpdate button then click the Configure button and then click the ISP button and see if any adjusments there do the trick.

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 13:15:23ID: 9051399

ok, live update now working, any idea's for AOL Instant Messenger? I also have a feeling that as/when i install another program that needs a connection, i'm gonna have the same problem.

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-08-01 at 13:24:16ID: 9051452

I don't use AIM so I don't know what settings it uses.

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 13:31:36ID: 9051487

Aim's settings for connection are, modem or LAN, reconnect automatiaclly, display reconnect dialog, and a button for configuring proxy settings and the AIM server. No option to select which connection to use.

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-08-01 at 14:11:53ID: 9051739

Hmmm which one is set to now?

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-01 at 14:13:53ID: 9051754

It's set to modem,  Reconnect automatically, show reconnect dialog, no proxy settins, and the default AIM server.

btw, forgot to mention earlier that i have XP Pro, this version doesn't have some special security settings which might be causing the problems does it?

by: CrazyOnePosted on 2003-08-01 at 15:17:01ID: 9052004

Well the security shouldn't be an isssue. If XP is using NTFS and it is the PRO version I bet you have Simple File Sharing turned on which is why the security tab isn't there.

If you want to turn off Simple File Sharing

Click Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View.
Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and un-check Use Simple File Sharing.
Click OK.

by: C_130_HercPosted on 2003-08-02 at 16:31:04ID: 9055664

ok, i'm running FAT32 and simple sharing is turned off, not that that has anything to do with the dialler problems, i'm probly gonna grin and bear it with XP, til sum1 brings out an OS i actually like, or i find my cd for the stable old 98 (well, most stable in my experience!)
