Question

No window on the taskbar when minimized

Asked by: vukas

When I minimize window of any program it can't be seen on the taskbar. I've read about this problem on Windows 98 and solution was to kill some viruses. I've tested my computer on viruses with Kaspersky Anti Virus and Symantec Anti Virus Enterprise Edition. Both programs have up-to-date databases for viruses and neither one found any of it. I hope that the only solution is not to reinstall windows. Does anybody know better solution?
Thanks anyway.

There have been a great number of questions where a "pseudo trojan" called FriendGreeting caused this problem of missing taskbar buttons:

http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?threadid=100166&highlight=taskbar

The Symantec security site (Norton Antivirus) has come up with removal instructions for this:

Lee Tutor has the correcet answer here...I have run into this on several occasions doing contract work....You virus scans will not find it because the Virus scan companies do not consider this a virus since the program "Technically" has an Un-install feature. Follow the links he gave you and you shoud be back on your way to happy computing.

I took steps from URL that LeeTutor suggested.
First of all, I don't have any of those programs WinSrv Reg and Friend Greetings that causes viruses. Also, I've checked for files and registry keys that should be removed and none of that I haven't found. Anyway I took virus scan in safe mode and nothing was found. The problem didn’t disappear.
After that I logged as another user and in that case I can see all programs when minimized on taskbar. If I delete file ntuser.dat I in my profile all programs can be seen on taskbar, but than I lose my settings for that profile. This trade off at this point is not suitable for me.
Conclusion is that for my profile registry is corrupted. Does anybody know how can I find KEY that causes not to see windows on the taskbar when minimized?

hi:

had u try to repair the window or any experts had suggested it??

Repair Windows XP
logged on as an administrator:
Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media.
Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP, or reinstall Windows XP. For additional information about how to complete an in-place upgrade or repair of Windows XP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341

How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Maybe look here:

Right-tap equivalent anywhere in the taskbar, tap Properties, and then tap the Taskbar tab.
Select the Hide inactive icons check box.
Tap Customize.
Each icon has three options: Always show, Always hide, and Hide when inactive.

Thats probably not it, but worth a look.
