Question

Cannot Start XP Pro in Safe Mode

Asked by: dudleydocker

I have a 18 GB Seagate as my boot drive off of an Adaptec 39160.  I am unable to boot into safe mode.  When I hit F8 during start-up I get a scrolling screen of what looks like lines in a multi-boot setup that fill the screen then freeze ( I do NOT have amulti-boot setup).  A hard reboot is needed to get off of the screen.

I need safe mode to get back to a restore point prior to the MS critical update that hosed my system. Help!

Thanks.

What scrolls up yuor screen looks something like this

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\kdcomulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\config.system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS.siside.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys

These are just paths to your system directory for drivers and files windows needs to load for safe mode

Generally, if your PC freezes when going into safe mode, then you may need to reinstall Windows

Have u had any upgrades recently or any devices connected to your computer?

Also, what is the last line on the screen when it stops?

I am the Adminstrator on this PC.  I get to the logon screen, can input my password, but then I get a stop error code and something about
not being able to verify the license (sorry, I forgot my notes at home) and then it logs me out back to the logon screen.  Guest account won't
work either--same message although I do see a brief flash of the guest account desktop.

Yes, this is what it looks like:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\kdcomulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\config.system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS.siside.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys

but it freezes and won't go any further without a hard reboot.

Last known good config won't work either.

I was applying about a dozen patches to this PC this weekend (after last week's fun with sobig) and was doing fine until
rebooting after one of them (again sorry, no notes as I write this).

Other devices are just a hub and two other XP machines, plus a couple of printers.  No recent changes, just the MS security updates.

Yes, after the SCSI BIOS displays the ID's and devices.

I can't get any of the links to work...I'll try to search Adaptec's site  from what's included in some of the URL's.....

I can get all the way to the logon screen in XP.....As sson as I type in my password and it starts loading I get the stop message...when
I cliick OK on the message it 'logs me off' and kicks me back to the logon screen...

it seems like it's in XP.....

no go on the links....:(

Try booting to the XP CD and use the repair console to repair the installation.

by: dudleydockerPosted on 2003-08-27 at 05:56:10ID: 9231938

Finally got the links to work this morning....
I have already tried a repair off of the CD....no good.

by: dew_associatesPosted on 2003-08-27 at 06:18:20ID: 9232074

"no good"...what happened?

by: dudleydockerPosted on 2003-08-27 at 06:21:34ID: 9232096

sorry for the poor answer.  I was able to boot off of the CD and get to the repair console, but given the circumstances I'm experiencing, I
wasn't sure what to run!

Is there a way to do a system restore from the repair console?

Also, the Adpatec links are for the most recent BIOS, which is already installed, and troubleshooting that I've already tried, and/or doesn't
seem applicable to the problems I'm experiencing.

by: dew_associatesPosted on 2003-08-27 at 06:58:18ID: 9232383

Just try to run a normal repair.

by: daletianPosted on 2003-08-27 at 08:44:03ID: 9233414

right now, there isn't a way to do a system restore from the recovery console but microsoft is aware as a lot of requests have come in for it. To get a list of all the commands you can run from the recovery console, type HELP at the prompt.

dd, how are you making out with this?

by: dew_associatesPosted on 2003-09-13 at 02:37:46ID: 9351608

dd, are you still with us?

by: dew_associatesPosted on 2003-09-16 at 07:08:51ID: 9370628

Now that's nonsense!

by: dudleydockerPosted on 2003-09-16 at 07:09:56ID: 9370638

OK, I feel pretty stupid on this one......when I was going into safe mode, I assumed what scrolled on the screen and then stopped was
an error.  I assumed it was freezing because it stopped....it didn't freeze...it was just taking a LONG time to get into safe mode.  It finally
did go into safe mode all by itself.  And I was able to do a system restore.

Daletian and Dew, you both deserve points on this one...I tried to split them to both of you and it all went to Daletian.  Can I fix this
after the fact?

Thanks.
