window xp shut down message

i am using window xp and ie explorer for browzing. while i am browzing internet a sudden message saying " this system is shutting down. save changes and log off. shutdown initiated from NT authority/system. window must restart because (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly)  then pc was shut down and restarted again. this happened twice to me and i dont know what is the cause. kindly advise

You have been infected with the blsater worm.

If you cannot stay online long enough to retrieve these items then
right click my computer >> manage >> expand service and applications >> click on Services >>
double click Remote Procedure Call >> click Recovery tab >> set 1st 2nd and 3rd failure to take no action

If you do not have anti-virus software here are some free web-based ones to scan your computer

This could be due a rash of unauthorized access. Download the latest security patch from Microsoft

Buffer Overrun In RPC Interface Could Allow Code Execution and Reboot

If you don't get an opportunity to apply the patch before the PC reboots, go to start > run > services.msc.

Right click Remote Procedure Call, select Properties, then Recovery. On all three drop-down boxes in this window, select take no action. The default is set to reboot. This will give you all the time you need to update. Then after the update, change it back the way it was.  Please note that Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > uncheck Automatically Restart does not seem to work to prevent system reboot.

One thing that may be causing this problem is the W32.Blaster.worm, which is written up here:

I have the same RPC shut down problem. I had MSBLAST but cleaned it out and added the Microsoft patch. MSBLAST has gone from the computer but the shutdown problem remains.

Any help would be appreciated.

For a real quick "work-a-round" while you d'load the patch.
as soon as you see the "shutdown" message,click on start>run and type
shutdown /a,  hit enter stops the process. Now, you can also change the date on your system clock back a few days and this will buy you some time as well.
Just don't use this as a band-aid, remeber to resolve the issue.
