Can you get into safe mode?
To get into safemode follow these instructions:
restart your LT
After the initial POST messages (the very first thing you usually see) start pressing F8
You will get a DOS like menu. Select Safe Mode
Log into the system as administrator

Try removing the program from the control panel's Add Remove Programs applet

START | RUN | MSCONFIG
Locate any references to Norton 2004 and remove the check beside it.

Now restart your PC and see if you can get into your regular system.

Hi ,
     what u can do is to click on normal startup in system config utility and hit Apply and Hit close.
    Chose Exit without Restart.

Then click start->Allprograms->Accessories->system tools->System Restore.
Chose Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next
Chose the date and time u installed Norton and proceed to restore computer before the install was done.
If u chose the date and time when u installed, it will undo the install changes. If u don't find the exact date
u can chose a date prior to the install date.

Reboot and u will get rid of Norton errors.
Mail me back if problem persists!!!!!

Alex

To get rid of Norton from running in the startup, try these

Open registry editor. Start->Run->Regedit. Hit OK

Browse to HkeyLocalMachine->Software->Microsoft->windows->Current version->Run
Highlight  Run key and look on the Right side window. U will find entries like
Npotect, symantec, autoprotect. Rightclik on them and delete them.

Browse to HkeyCurrentUser->Software->Microsoft->windows->Current version->Run
and look for the Norton or symantec entries there as well. If found, delete them

Close the registry editor.
Rightclick start button. Left Click Explorer. On the left side window, u will see start menu highlighted.
click the + on programs below it.
Highlight Startup folder and delete everything from the right side window.

Close the Explorer window and Restart the machine.

Addionally, if problem persists, u can go to
Start->Run->Msconfig
Click on services tab and Check the box "Hide all Microsoft Services" at the bottom.
Then check the box "Disable All" for the remaining Third party services.
Hit Apply and Close. Click Restart.

Good Day

On reboot, u will start getting message.
You are using system configuration utility.
U need to check the box at the bottom
"Don't show me this message again"
and Hit OK. The message will not come again.

Log back onto the system in safe mode as administrator
START | RUN | REGEDIT

Navigate to either HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOftware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN

In either of these two keys, if you see any reference to Norton or symantec software do the following
Backup the RUN Registry key. You can do this by select the Run Key Then using FILE | EXPORT REGISTRY KEY  save it with a name you will recognize and to a folder you can get to.
Now remove the references to Norton or Symatec

Restart your PC.

If Norton doesn't try to install the the problem is fixed.

If you don't find the Norton or Symantec references in either of the key's above the look in the keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUNONCE  or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUNONCE

Do the same as I instructed in my previous post.

but when i restart my Lt it appears again :(((((((((((
i'm sick of it. don't know what i'm doing.. afraid that i did something wrong that going to cause problems in the future

by: Huseyin1Posted on 2003-09-02 at 23:55:38ID: 9272424

you can search for missing files like the one you have mensioned above by doing an SFC scan in the start/run menu, see if that help's.

also look in the same location that I mesioned above for anything with Symantic init, and delete it:

start/my documents/documents and settings/"your username"/startup/and now delete it from there.

this will hopefully stop the error, I wish you luck

>>i did as gemarti said.. but i want to get rid of norton wizard running each time i restart my machine and its icon appears >>in the startup menu

Log onto the machine as administrator. If you are running XP Home you can only do this in safe mode.
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up

Delete the shortcut to the Norton application.
