The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Win XP boot problems

Asked by jruzvidzo in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: xp, windows

I've got an AMD 1Ghz 512MB machine. I tax this machine heavily on a daily basis, and have been running smoothly on windows XP pro, keeping it fully patched and updated, for a year or more.

I recently downloaded BootXP to try and customize my boot screen. Installed, backed up boot.ini and proceeded to let it change my boot screen (and replacing ntoskrnl.exe in the process). Restarted my machine, hoping to see Karate Garfield instead of the old WinXP boot screen, and after a while, just when it should be letting me log in, it flashes what appears to be a quick blue screen with an error and reboots!

Tried to enter safe mode, same problem, it reboots. I assmue this is because my system is set to reboot automatically on errors. Which I can't change (I assume because I can't get into Windows). So I booted from the XP CD, entered recovery console and replaced boot.ini with my original. That didn't help at all. So I booted from the CD again, started an install and let it find my installation, chose to repair it, and rebooted again.

Now the strangest part. It starts up, shows the boot screen with progress bar and everything, and then, when I should entering the GUI, my screen goes blank and the *lights* on my monitor start flashing rapidly. i rebooted and tried to enter safe mode, it loaded all the drivers/files (I assume), then blank screen and flashing lights.

Someone please help, as all my projects/tasks are sitting on this installation. If I had more points it would be more important!!!
