If you are receiving the following error message:

"The system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was
inititated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Time before shutdown: (counts down from 60 sec to 0). Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) Service terminated unexpectedly."

This issue is known to Microsoft. Here is what needs done to solve it. This only applies to those of you who use Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

The security patch for Windows 2000 users is located here.

The security patch for Windows XP users is located here.

It is highly recommended that ALL users also check for important updates at:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This is a free service and will help improve the overall performance of your
computers.

If you can not get the download because of restarts happening too quickly, do the following:

Click on Start, then Control Panel. If you have "Pick a Category" use the "Switch to Classic View" link on the left of your screen. Then double click on Administrative Options. When this new screen loads, double click on "Services". Scroll down until you see "Remote Procedure Call" (there will be two listings, you need the first one.) Using the right mouse button, click on this, and select "Properties" from the menu. Go to the Recovery tab, and change all three boxes to "Restart the service" instead of "Restart the machine." Again, there are THREE boxes, make sure you get all three. Then click OK. You should now be able to stay online to get the patch downloaded. This has become an issue because there is a new worm on the internet that is taking advantage of this security hole.

It is also HIGHLY recommended that you go here and follow the instructions to make sure you have not been infected locally by the worm.
You can also download their removal tool here, but you will still want to view the instructions on Sym

CC everyone above!
In the future... Get control of the situation (or lose it... depends on point of view:-) by use of
a) Antivirus software (http://www.free-av.com is a low-cost alternative;-),
b) get and use a "personal firewall" if nothing better is possible (like a real firewall:-) ... Kerio personal FW is free for personal use (http://www.kerio.com),
c) Use windows update,
d) use your antivirus and persona FWs methods of update/upgrade _frequently_ ... Once a day is reasonable.

Sorry peaple if I repeat your stuff.

kerio blocks "ports", no matter tcp or udp, so it easily becomes data-damaging

by: GnsPosted on 2003-10-14 at 01:59:49ID: 9545489

Yes. All "personal/application" FWs are more or less stupid. But they are better than nothing... If one has to use windoze at all...:-)

Glenn:

Useful for redundant rules on MS-DOS host, takes almost no additional resources, and much better than nothing

Yep, thats a windoze packetfilter app allright... Thanks for the link (although I doubt I'll ever use it, since I'm more of a linux type-o'-fwadmin:-). <Opinion> People who don't get by with an "application FW app" should be looking at HW and/or *nix firewalling of some serious kind anyway.</Opinion>
That link indicates you're french, right gheist;-)? As well as the Bull tips...

In my computer go to services and applications
