Sounds like you bought a machine with an illegal copy of WindowsXP. Did you get a WindowsXP Authenticity certificate with the machine? If not, your copy isn't legit.
There are ways to change the product ID on your machine once you purchase (or obtain from where you got your PC) a legitimate copy of the OS and a valid product key.
