"If you are using Norton AntiVirus 2003 you might not be able to close MSN Messenger"
Sunray,
Messenger service has nothing to do with windows messenger. If U read the description, it says its not related with windows messenger.
Hariprasadrj,
Closing down Outlook express and IE is a good idea. becoz these applications use the messenger service.
To turn down messenger
(Assuming u have XPPro)
1. Start->Run->gpedit.msc
2. Go to
-User Configuration
-Administrative Templates
-Windows Components
-Windows Messenger
Set 'Do not automatically start windows messenger initially' to ENABLED
OR
Set 'Do not allow windows messenger to be run' to ENABLED
All the best
