Question

Reformating a NTFS drive to Fat32

Asked by: earlhop

Would you tell me how to reformat a drive that has been for formated in Win XP to NTFS back to FAT 32 so I can install the drive in a machine with Win ME.  I want the drive to be FAT 32, but I can not get it to reformat in FAT32.  I installed it in my Win XP system as a second drive and went to format, but the only option it gives me is NTFS.  Is it possible to change it back to FAT 32.  Is there a place I can go on the web to get a program that will allow me to do this?  I also tried FDISK, but can not seem to do it their either, I could be doing some thing wrong in FDISK, but don't think so.  Thanks for your help.

If you are planning to remove Windows xp you can still delete and format the partition to FAT32 using Windows XP CD. If you have other plans find yourself PartitionMagic ver 5 for download. This will convert NTFS to FAT32 again will out data loss.

Cheers ;)

I have tried all your recommendations, I can not get the drive to go to FAT32.  It remains always NFTS.  There is nothing on the drive, no system, no files.  I installed XP, but don't want it, I want ME and I must have FAT32 on the disk.  I tried the formating using the XP cd and that did not work.  I told it to format using FAT32, however as I said it remains NFTS. I don't have any 3rd party software as Partition Magic, so I am at a loss.  I am not a computer wiz, just a novice and trying my best.  Any other ideas?  Thanks.

download the 'small linux' boot disk from here:
http://www.toms.net/rb/
boot from it, run fdisk, and change the partition type to whatever you need. don't forget to save the chages.

Hi ,

U can reformat the drive in FAT32 using FDISK.

1. Boot with a FAT32 formatted startup disk (win98 or winME startup disks from www.bootdisk.com will be the best)

2. Choose Start computer without CDROM support.

3. At A:\ prompt, type

      FDISK

Press Y for enabling larger disk support

4. Select 3 from the main menu for Delete partition

5. windows will display NTFS as unknown partition or non DOS partition.

6. press the no. of the partition which refers to non DOS (its ur NTFS) and hit ENTER

7. If u r not sure, delete all the partition and then from main menu,
    choose create a new partition

8. Add a PRI DOS partition

9. Exit FDISK

now format the C: drive with command
Format C:

once formatted, load windows ME

All the best

Alex
