Browse All TopicsI got a problem that I have researched quite a bit on the web and found many others with the same problem but no fix has been found.
When I open System Information it says
"Can't Collect Information
Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing."
and I believe this issues also has to do with the following after running the network diagnostic which could be why my network doesn't work, peer to peer one XP machine one Win2000 machine. Neither can see each other.
===================
- Internet Explorer Web Proxy WMI Error FAILED
Unable to connect to WMI namespace 'netdiagnostics'
Computer Information

Now before anybody suggests to make sure WMI service is running don't because it is running.
In the event viewer after running the System Information I get a DCOM error
===================
Event ID: 10000
NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
"Unable to start a DCOM Server: {73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-9
"Access is denied. "
Happened while starting this command:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\w
===================
Suggesting a permission problem on the C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\ folder or the wmiprvse.exe file
Have played around with the SYSTEM account permissions.
Added NETWORK SERVICES as one of the owners of this folder which doesn't bring up the "Can't Collect Information" error. However during the "Refreshing System Information" nothing happens. Same thing if I add my profile to the ownership.
I have replaced the wmiprvse.exe file
Can run wmiprvse.exe -Embedding using start > run so the file seems to be ok. But even manually running it doesn't help because System Information wants to run it separately
System Restore didn't help
Reinstall of SP1a no help
SFC /scannow no help
I suspect doing a Repair install probably would fix this so please don't suggest doing it because I am looking to remedy without doing this.
No syware or viruses. Have checked.
